Portwell Adds New Desktop Model to Its Family of Intel EP80579 SoC-based Communication Appliances

FREMONT, CALIF. -May 5, 2009-American Portwell Technology, Inc., (http://www.portwell.com) a wholly owned subsidiary of Portwell, Inc., a world-leading innovator and supplier of Network Security Appliances, and a member of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance (Intel ECA), announces CATO-2010, a new, desktop ultra-compact network appliance platform based on the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor with Intel QuickAssist Technology, the new Intel system-on-chip (SoC) solution with built-in security features. By using the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor, American Portwell's CATO-2010 maximizes power efficiency to provide up to 30 percent power savings when compared with traditional Intel Architecture (IA). CATO-2010 is small, compact (9" W x 7.76" D x1.65" H) and also both EU and China RoHS compliant.

American Portwell's CATO-2010 supports DDR2 800/533 ECC or non-ECC memory up to 4 GB; four GbE ports onboard; three Gigabit Ethernet interface via RGMII (with optional hardware security acceleration); one PCI-E x1 GbE interface for extended networking application; optional two segments Ethernet bypass function; security services and bulk crypto for IPSec, VPN, Firewall, SSL, IP Forwarding and TCP Proxy and Content Filtering. Storage support includes solid-state flash such as Compact Flash (CF) and Disk On Module (DOM).

Ideal Network Security Solution
Available now, Portwell's CATO-2010 joins the CATO-2000 and CATO-3000 as part of Portwell's Intel EP80579-based family and is the ideal platform solution for Network Security such as Firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS, Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus, and UTM; Network Management such as routers, RAS gateways, QoS, wireless controllers and streaming. Other applications include medical DICOM and PACS, and industrial automation control via Ethernet TCP/IP. In addition, CATO-2010 can function as a security hardware platform that meets the requirements of Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).

Single Chip Simplicity
Mark Huang, American Portwell Technology's product marketing manager, comments, "The main benefit of the Intel EP80579 SoC solution for our customers is its single chip simplicity, which facilitates packet transmission when compared to multi-chip solutions. In addition it has low power consumption and familiar IA-32 architecture for software programming. Customers using the new CATO-2010 also benefit from Intel QuickAssist Technology," Huang explains. "This provides hardware base security acceleration drivers, including bulk encryption, hashing, cipher, public/private key encryption, random number generation and authentications. It can also free up general purpose CPU cycles to support other features and it represents a 30 percent power savings when compared to traditional IA," he adds.

More Choices in Form Factor
According to Frank Shen, American Portwell Technology's product marketing director, the new CATO-2010, with an ultra compact desktop footprint, is a great addition to Portwell's existing EP80579 product family. "This means we now provide our customers with more choices of ideal low power solution for network security applications in the small and mid-sized business (SMB) environment," Shen confirms. "What's more, with the Intel EP80579 SoC built-in, our new CATO-2010 supports ECC memory for mission critical applications, Ethernet bypass function to enhance network availability and reduce downtime and it features Intel's extended 7-year long lifecycle support."
