M 33 Offers Cost-Effective Heavy-Duty Turning --- And then Some

ERLANGER, KY - Romi Machine Tools, Ltd, an industry leader in chip-making and turning machine technology, has built a reputation on. The M Series of Combination lathes is yet another step in providing customer-driven solutions to a broad array of precision turned-part challenges providing - and providing these solutions ever-more flexibly. The M 33 will go easy on your budget and is ideal for mixed volume, short run operations as well as dedicated high-volume applications. It's this kind of flexibility and broad appliction appeal that has made Romi famous in chip-making and turning technologies.

Some specs
With a swing of 33.46" and a distance between centers of 80", the M 33 x 80 combines high performance turning capacity within a compact 203" x 96" space-saving footprint. Swing over carriage wind is 32.68". Swing over cross slide is 21.65". X-axis travel is 18.7". Z-axis travel is 80". Rapid traverse rates of 315 ipm (Z-axis) and 315 ipm <200"/197 ipm <200" C.D.(X- axis) mean accelerated machine cycle times and reduced non-cut time which increases overall throughput.

The M 33 has a rigid cast iron "H" bed design. All guideways are induction hardened and ground. They feature a Turcite-coated carriage and cross-slide that move smoothly on the solid cast iron bed and saddle guideways, thus ensuring superior rigidity, increased accuracy, improved cutting tool performance and long machine life.

The spindle. A new belt-driven cartridge-style gearless headstock features a beefy high-torque 50 hp AC GE Fanuc "P"-type spindle motor with variable speed drive. The two-speed gearbox gives the M 33 maximum torque for heavy cutting with full horsepower at speeds as low as 48 RPM. Which means those really heavy cuts are not a challenge at all. Spindle speeds are infinitely variable within each range.

Two spindle options allow you to match the spindle speed and size to specific production needs. A2-11" spindles feature rigid mounting, larger through-hole capacities and higher RPM, while A2-15" spindles offer quick chuck changing between three- and fourjaw chucks. The A2-11" has a through hole of 5.4" and a speed range of 7 to 1200 RPM (low range), while the high range is 12 to 1,200 RPM. The A2-15" has a through hole of 9.9"and speed ranges of 5 to 750 RPM (low range) and a high range of 5 to 170 RPM. Torque: A2-11" is 3,517 ftlbs; A2-15" is 5,501 ftlbs. Full horsepower: A2-11" is 75 RPM; A2-15" is 48 RPM. X-axis repeatability is 0.0002"; Z-axis repeatability is 0.0002"/300mm/.

To assure the rigidity required for heavy-duty cutting, the spindle is supported by angular contact ball bearings at the nose and a double-row of cylindrical roller bearings at the rear. The spindle cartridge is lubricated for life, and the spindle design eliminates the need for oil recirculation or refrigeration systems to maintain spindle temperature, thus offering years of reliable performance with reduced operating and maintenance costs.

The M 33 is not just a contender - it's rock solid and rigid enough for the toughest jobs thrown its way.

Tailstock
A rigid two-piece tailstock is standard on all the M 33 lathes. The two-piece construction allows easy alignment. A dual clamp design means you can do very large diameter drilling using the tailstock. The front mounted quill handwheel makes positioning of the quill an easy reach from the end of the part. The two speed manual quill can be quickly moved into position or fine feed can be used for drilling. The tail-stock body is positioned using the carriage.

An automated lubrication system, a complete coolant system and splash guards with overlapping doors are standard.

The control. The GE Fanuc 21i-T features the latest technological advancements in a uniquely small space. The 10.4" color LCD and full keyboard are mounted on a pendant that is attached to the apron. The pendant and apron are capable off traveling the length of the bed for operator convenience. All controls are outside the guards where they are not exposed to chips and coolant. A shock absorber keeps the control in position when keys are pressed. GE Fanuc CNCs and associated spindle and servo drives have an exceptional reputation for reliability. For example, according to GE Fanuc, sub-system failures per month are nearly unheard of - 0.00495 on the CNC, 0.00099 on the servo drive and 0.00376 on the spindle drive.

Operator-friendly software. Romi Machine Guidance software in the 21i-T is the ideal CNC for operators with varying levels of experience, as it simplifies the transition from manual programming to G code programming. As the operator's skill level rises and/or part geometry complexity increases, the operator can easily move through four levels of part programming generation. These are: manual cutting, guidance single cutting, guidance cycle cutting.

The 21i-T CNC has built-in machining cycles for profiling (rough and finish), grooving, threading, drilling, boring, and rigid tapping. These cycles generate a part program based on information the operator enters, as prompted, to describe the part. The CNC automatically generates the part program, which then can be converted to a standard G code format. The 21i-T can be programmed offline or online using G code language, allowing the use of standard G code features available from GE Fanuc.

For more than 70 years and some 140,000 installations Romi's innovation, reliability, dependability and ease-of-use have set it apart - and ahead - of the competition. Romi's Combination and CNC lathes, turning and machining centers are meticulously built at its nine-plant manufacturing complex in Santa Barbara d'Oeste, Brazil, and are sold and supported in more than 60 countries. From its North American Headquarters in Erlanger, Kentucky, Romi provides an unparalleled degree of training, service and support for all Romi machine tool products.
