Fujitsu Introduces New Color, Production-Level Scanner Equipped with Kofax's Renowned VirtualReScan® (VRS) Hardware & Software

New fi-4860C2 VRS Scanner Incorporates Fast Color Scanning Speeds, Ultrasonic Double-Feed Detection, Pre & Post Scan Imprinter & 500-Page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 23 -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today introduced the Fujitsu fi-4860C2 VRS scanner into its award-winning line of document management scanners. The production-level fi-4860C2 VRS scanner now comes bundled with Kofax's newest version of VirtualReScan(R) (VRS) automated document image-enhancement software (VRS 4.1 Professional), Adrenaline(R) 650i SCSI interface boards and SCSI cable for complete out of the box connectivity.

The addition of these new VRS capabilities provides users with more robust image enhancement features that further reduce the need for manual intervention in the scanning process and gives them the ability to tap into the widely under-utilized color capabilities of nearly all scanners by offering intelligent color detection and color saturation. In addition, the new Advanced Clarity feature is now available to combat the most challenging documents. Advanced Clarity offers more image quality options and the ability to process documents that were once considered impossible to process due to noisy backgrounds. These new elements allow users to maximize scanning time and process more images without human intervention.

The Fujitsu fi-4860C2 VRS scanner also comes equipped with a 500-page automatic document feeder (ADF) which handles document sizes ranging from 3" x 3" to 11" x 17" and can scan mixed batches containing documents of various weights, sizes, colors and shades. Furthermore, using the scanners "thin paper kit" option, users can expand document feedability beyond that of common paper types to a range that runs from 31g/m(squared) to 52 g/m(squared).

Additionally, the Fujitsu fi-4860C2 VRS scanner comes equipped with dual color CCD arrays to scan both sides of a page in one pass, enabling users to scan 63 pages-per-minute (ppm) and 125 images-per-minute (ipm) at 200 dpi, in color, grayscale or monochrome. It also offers pre and post imprinter options for users with demanding document management and verification needs. Of course, the new scanner contains ultrasonic double-feed detection technology to help prevent lost images and enable larger batches of mixed document types to be scanned quickly, reliably, and automatically.

"Obviously, the fi-4860C2 VRS scanner is equipped with all the features that companies in the healthcare, government, banking and service bureau industries would look for in a production class scanning solution," said Terry Sutherland, chief executive officer, ImageSource, Inc. "The one thing you can't put a price on is the reliability of any product. The Fujitsu legacy in the document imaging market has given them an excellent reputation as a company willing to listen to their customers and incorporate the necessary functionality into their scanners to make sure quality stays ahead of the game. The addition of the latest Kofax hardware based VRS technology is something customers want in this type of scanner."

Even with all the new features and functionality of the fi-4860C2 VRS scanner, the Fujitsu Imaging Products Group (IPG) has kept the same low price as its successor, with prices starting at $17,995.00 (U.S. list). Customers can buy the Fujitsu fi-4860C2 VRS scanner through authorized resellers, VARs, and distributors including Compucenter de Mexico, Inc., Cranel Imaging (a division of Cranel, Inc.), Ingram Micro, Inc., NewWave Technologies, Inc. and Tech Data Corporation.

About VirtualReScan (VRS)

VRS performs a multi-point inspection of each document which greatly improves readability of scanned images by automatically straightening, cropping and optimizing exposure in real time. Image inconsistencies such as alignment, brightness and contrast are immediately corrected by VRS so that only the straightest, most readable images are captured by the system.

VRS achieves high levels of accuracy in data captured from scanned documents by greatly reducing the need for manual corrections of intelligent character recognition (ICR) and optical character recognition (OCR) results. VRS improved OCR results approximately 35 percent in tests conducted by independent research firm Doculabs. With VRS, users can load any combination of document types and sizes into a scanner and simply press the scan button.

The use of VRS as part of the document capture process could result in lower operating costs due to increased automated recognition accuracy, fewer rescans, easier-to-read images, and a significant reduction in the manual labor required to presort documents and change scanner settings.
