Color LED is designed for direct display backlighting.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring lens specifically designed for backlighting, Advanced Power TOPLED Plus exhibits brightness levels of 14 lm (red), 24 lm (green), and 28 mW/sr (blue) at operating current of 100 mA. Viewing angle ensures uniform backlighting, and chips used are 500 µm in size and fabricated with ThinGaN or Thinfilm technology for efficiencies of 65 lm/W (red), 59 lm/W (green) and 27% overall efficiency (blue). Only 1,200 LEDs are needed to backlight 24 in. diagonal LCD.

New Advanced Power TOPLED Plus from Osram Emits 15% More Light for Backlighting Large LCDs

Brightest color LED in its class for direct display backlighting

Santa Clara, CA (October 10, 2008) - The new Advanced Power TOPLED Plus from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is the brightest color LED in its class, providing 15% more light for direct display backlighting than standard Advanced Power TOPLEDs. Depending on the display, the LEDs in the usual combination of red (623 nm), green (527 nm) and blue (457 nm) cover more than 125% of the NTSC color gamut and are suitable for all directly backlit displays, particularly for large format LCDs in sizes of 24 inches diagonal and up. This new generation of Advanced Power TOPLED Plus offers an optimized display brightness-to-thickness ratio so that the minimum number of LEDs is required.

The improved brightness of the new Advanced Power TOPLED Plus is made possible by a new lens specially designed for backlighting. At an operating current of 100 mA, the LEDs achieve 14 lm (red), 24 lm (green) and 28 mW/sr (blue). The wider viewing angle of the new lens ensures absolutely uniform backlighting. The chips used are 500 µm in size and are fabricated with the latest ThinGaN or Thinfilm technology for the highest efficiency in their class: 65 lm/W (red), 59 lm/W (green) and 27% overall efficiency (blue). With a lifetime of more than 50,000 hours, the Advanced Power TOPLED Plus provides perfect compatibility with typical LCD lifespans. The LEDs' low profile - only 2.25 mm high - enables the design and production of very thin backlights.

OSRAM's Advanced Power TOPLED Plus is suitable for all display sizes. By enabling an optimized brightness-to-thickness display ratio, only 1,200 LEDs are needed to backlight a 24-inch diagonal LCD compared to previous designs that required up to 1800 LEDs to produce the same brightness. Projects are already under way with key customers for use in 46-inch monitors. "Close relations with our customers and extensive application support enable us to ensure that the special requirements of each and every display are fully achieved," said Winfried Schwedler, Marketing Manager for LED Backlighting at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "This includes not only the selection of suitable LEDs but also the logistical support for module manufacture based on the latest simulation methods. The result is extremely homogenous display backlighting."
