Cold Plates fit in small spaces.

Press Release Summary:

Press-Lock II(TM) series uses smaller, tightly packed tubes to improve thermal performance by 40 to 50% over company's previous models. Plates are 0.3 in. thick and tubes are 0.25 in. dia, allowing for tight packaging and stack construction. Tubes are coplanar with plate, allowing parts to be mounted on both sides. Applications include cooling electronics, power supplies, lasers, RF transmitters, semiconductor processing equipment, thermoelectrics, and UPSes.

Original Press Release:

New Thinner Cold Plate Design Improves Thermal Performance up to 50%

May 23. 2002. Woburn, MA - Lytron, the Total Thermal Solutions(TM) company, introduces its newest line of cold plates designed for contact cooling of power electronics and other high watt density electronics applications. The new ultra-thin Press-Lock II(TM) series uses smaller, more tightly packed tubes to improve thermal performance by 40 to 50% over other tubed cold plates. Furthermore the new product line provides symmetric, two-sided mounting and eliminates performance-limiting adhesives or epoxies.

Press-Lock II provides four significant benefits to power electronics users:

- Exceptional Thinness -- Press-Lock II cold plates are only 0.3" thick, a 40% reduction over cold plates using thicker tubing constructions. This design allows for tighter packaging formulations and stack construction, which frees up valuable system real estate.

- Outstanding Value -- Press-Lock II cold plates are roughly one-fourth the cost of more expensive solutions such as vacuum-brazed cold plates. Lytron engineers took their Press-Lock I(TM) manufacturing experience and applied it to this new design, making Press-Lock II very cost-effective.

- Excellent Performance - Design improvements increased thermal performance by 40 to 50% over traditional tubed cold plates. The Press-Lock II series' cooling tubes are only 0.25" in diameter versus industry standard of 0.375". As a result, fluid velocities are more than double and provide much better thermal mixing. The smaller tubes are packed closer together than is possible with the thicker tubes. Finally, we optimized our locking geometry to accommodate the 0.25" tubing so that performance-limiting epoxy is not needed.

- Dual-Sided Mounting - The tubes are coplanar with the plate, allowing parts to be mounted on both sides.

Applications for the cold plates include Power Electronics Cooling, Power Supplies, Lasers, RF Transmitters, Semiconductor Processing Equipment, Thermoelectrics, and Uninterruptible Power Supplies.

"To maintain Lytron's leadership in liquid contact cooling, we are continually developing new and better cold plate technologies," says Charlie Carswell, Lytron's President. "Lytron now offers 4 unique cold plate technologies, more than anyone else in the industry. This broad product offering means we can select the best technology to meet our customers varying applications. It is another example of our Total Thermal Solutions(TM) philosophy."

The copper tubes used in the standard models are suitable for water and most other cooling fluids. Stainless steel tubes are available for custom configurations using deionized water or corrosive fluids. This simple and cost-effective plate can be drilled, tapped, or further surface-machined. The Press-Lock II is available in six and twelve inch lengths and straight and beaded fittings. Lytron can drill and tap holes according to customer requirements. For OEM volumes, the plates can be further modified.

Lytron is the only ISO 9001 registered Total Thermal Solutions provider. ISO certification assures users that Lytron's liquid-cooling products are defect-free and will provide years of reliable, leak tight service.

Lytron designs and manufactures high performance heat transfer systems and components. Its cooling products include recirculating chillers, compact and portable non-refrigerated cooling systems, cold plates, aluminum oil coolers, copper tube fin heat exchangers, stainless steel tube-fin heat exchangers, and compact brazed-plate heat exchangers.
