Solution to Inhibit, Remove Graffiti

GARLAND, Texas - Chemprobe Coatings Systems, L.P., Garland, Texas, masonry coatings manufacturer and subsidiary of Tnemec Company, Inc., Kansas City, Mo., announces a new coatings system designed to shield from and remove graffiti, according to Al Morris, director of Chemprobe Coatings Systems. This new system is ideal for protecting commercial and public buildings, bridges, sound walls, highways, interstates, roadside structures, water tanks and industrial complexes - structures that often suffer from vandalism.

Across the country, cities deal with graffiti problems on a daily basis. Reports claim that the annual cost of graffiti abatement nationwide has reached about $10 - $12 billion, up from about $5 billion in 1990. To combat graffiti, which is visually obstructive and causes blight on the urban landscape, Chemprobe now offers Series 626 Dur A Pell GS (Graffiti Shield) and Series 680 Mark A Way.

"Because Series 626 is a silicone rubber-based barrier, paints will not permanently stick to the surface of structures treated with this coating. Series 626 withstands acrylic latex paints, enamel spray paints and markers, so if a structure is tagged with graffiti, it can easily be removed with Series 680 citrus cleaner," says Morris.

Series 626 Dur A Pell GS is an inorganic sealer that bonds naturally to a variety of uncoated surfaces and has been developed for use on above grade vertical surfaces such as brick, block, concrete, stone and stucco. Series 626 acts as an anti-graffitiant minimizing penetration of paint and allowing for easy removal. Additionally, because the coating is non-sacrificial, structures can be tagged multiple times and the graffiti can still be removed.

In addition to providing excellent protection from graffiti, Series 626 also acts as a water-repellant. The water-resistant properties of its silicone rubber base help Series 626 minimize the effects of weathering damage by adding extended water protection. Once applied, it creates a long-lasting, invisible barrier that also prevents damage caused by moisture. A high permeation rate allows moisture vapor to escape while prohibiting liquid from trespassing, thus reducing freeze/thaw damage.

Dur A Pell GS is transparent and dries to a clear finish without appreciably altering the natural appearance or texture of the substrate. User-friendly, it can be applied by brush, roller or spray.

Series 626 is intended to be used in conjunction with Series 680 to provide a complete graffiti protection system. Series 680 Mark A Way is a citrus cleaner that should be applied either by brush, roller or low-pressure sprayer directly to the coated surface as soon as possible after a surface has been defaced, says Morris. After it dwells on the surface for 5-8 minutes, a scrub brush may be used to remove the graffiti. A light washing is necessary to remove the cleaner. For more porous surfaces, a power washer under 1000 PSI may be used.
