Cincinnati Milacron Stacks Deck at Wood Composite Extrusion with New 4000 lb/hr TE125-33 Co-Rotating Parallel Twin Extruder

New 125 mm, 32.5:1 L/D extruder offers greater output, efficiency and economy to help wood/plastic composite producers capitalize on rapidly expanding market opportunities

June 2005 - Ready for the outdoor deck season, Cincinnati Milacron Extrusion Systems brings greater output, efficiency and economy to wood/plastic composite (WPC) extrusion. Industry leader in "one stop" direct extrusion systems for WPC processing, Milacron has joined forces with B&P Process Equipment, Saginaw, MI, to create a new co-rotating parallel twin-screw extruder rated for up to 4,000 lb/hr. output. Claimed to be the wood composite industry's most affordable extruder in purchase price per pound of output, the TimberEx TE125-33 also saves on life cycle costs with modular, segmented barrel and screw replacement. Co-branded by both Cincinnati Milacron and B&P Process Equipment, the TE125-33 features 125 mm bore diameter, 200 rpm max. screw speed, and 32.5:1 L/D. A unique centerline ratio and barrel geometry provide WPC processors with optimized internal free volume, ideal for medium-torque, low-shear, efficient mixing, melting, devolatilization and high output.

The extruder was adapted for WPC processing from a machine design proven in the compounding of engineering resins, powder coatings and similar materials with precise mixing requirements. It is outfitted for wood flour processing with Milacron/B&P co-developed technologies - a volumetric feeder for feeding of either pre-mixed or pelletized WPC compounds, vacuum vent system for removing moisture and volatiles, and two twin-screw side stuffers for use as vent cleaners to clear material from the vents and prevent clogging. The modular design of the barrel and screws allows flexibility in the number of vents and vent locations for optimal removal of moisture and volatiles.

Long L/D machine design maximizes processing volume while allowing longer residence time for uniform mixing and optimal, homogenous melt condition. Modular machine design permits the option of adding another barrel and screw segment, increasing total overall L/D to 37.5:1, depending on individual application and/or process requirements.

Barrels and screws are constructed of proprietary wear- and corrosion-resistant materials. Special metallurgies and materials are available upon request. Barrels are electrically heated (16 kW), water-cooled and heat-balanced for even temperature control.

The TE125-33 features a 400 hp AC variable frequency drive powering a compact gearbox through a mechanical clutch with torque overload protection.

The high-output extruder comes with Milacron's XTREEM XP touch-screen control with 15" color LCD screen, self-diagnostics, and Ethernet TCP/IP connectivity. Proven Milacron software provides full production control, including SPC monitoring and analysis, process alarms, slaved co-extruder speed control, and process "recipe" storage and call-up. Operators are provided with on-screen control panels, instant-access information screens with full-color graphics, and multi-language capability.

The TE125-33 is the first in a range of TimberEx co-rotating parallel twin-screw extruders being developed by the two companies for wood/plastic composite production. It will be joined by 100 mm and 160 mm bore diameter models, each in 32.5:1 L/D long machine configuration. The co-rotating twin-screw extruders join the Cincinnati Milacron conical and parallel counter-rotating twin-screw extruder product lines to provide the most extensive extrusion technology available on the market today for wood and natural fiber plastic composite applications.

Cincinnati Milacron's pre-engineered extrusion systems simplify entry into the rapidly growing wood composites market. High output capacities provide economies of scale for competitive advantage in volume production of composite lumber, decking and rails, fencing, window and door profiles, exterior trim, and other low-maintenance alternatives to traditional wood for construction and building products.
