MagnaChip Semiconductor Launches High-Performance 2 Megapixel CMOS Image Sensor SOC

SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 4 /-- MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd., a leading global designer, developer and manufacturer of image sensor solutions, mixed-signal and digital multimedia semiconductors, today, announced the launch of a high-performance 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200) CMOS image sensor SOC (MC521DA) for the camera phone application market.

The MC521DA allows for excellent low-light performance that can be achieved in module sizes typically reserved for 1/4" format sensors. Through the use of optimized processing, special lens correction algorithms, and carefully selected optical positioning, MagnaChip is able to offer a 2.8u pixel (1/3.2" format) SOC sensor for 1/4" format modules.

The MC521DA operates at 15 frames per second (fps) at full-resolution and up to 30 fps at VGA resolution. The chip has remarkably low 160mW power dissipation for full-resolution, full-frame rate operation. The 8-bit YUV output interfaces to all standard processors, and base-band solutions. Output interface operates at 1.8V and 3V modes while digital and analog circuits operate at 1.8V and 2.7V respectively. This chip is designed with large voltage margin to support the various supply ranges of OEMs.

The MC521DA includes a sophisticated processing system to achieve the best possible 2MP pictures. Adaptive pipeline control allows the picture to be optimized for multiple scene environments. Complex compensation algorithms ensure the best image quality.

Jason Hartlove, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Solutions Division of MagnaChip stated, "MagnaChip's MC521DA addresses the 2MP dilemma by providing the best possible low light performance while maintaining a small form factor. The MC521DA offers unique value by enabling small size modules and superb low-light performance in a single solution. The MC521DA offers a highly integrated 2MP SOC solution for use in all leading edge 2MP applications."

Hartlove continued, "2006 is the year for high volume mainstream 2MP. This single chip integrated system solution allows OEMs to affordably upgrade their 1.3MP solutions to 2MP. The MC521DA offers ease of use, compatible mechanics, competitive pricing and best in class performance."

Samples are now available of the 2 megapixel image sensor, with mass production expected to begin late in the first quarter of 2006. MagnaChip has a complete suite of demonstration systems and reference designs to support OEMs in end product development.
