Micrel Semiconductor Introduces 10Gbps Communications Products on 0.6um SiGe Process

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (January 24, 2002) - A new, high-speed Silicon Germanium (SiGe) fabrication process has been brought online by Micrel (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in the design and manufacture of integrated circuits for the analog, power management and high speed communications markets. This new, 0.6um ASSET-2 SiGe process gives Micrel the necessary technology to move into the l0Gbps communication space. Micrel's new GigaPro(TM) product line will address high-speed applications with data rates in excess of 10Gbps. The new process will yield products offering a three-to-four-fold improvement in bandwidth over the Company's current bipolar process.

Devices utilizing this process meet the wide-bandwidth, low jitter and skew requirements of SONET OC-48 to OC-192 systems, 10/100-Gigabit Ethernet, and 2X Fiber Channel systems. Micrel is currently beta-sampling its first product from the GigaPro(TM) family, a 10Gbps buffer/receiver. The SY58016 differential CML buffer is scheduled for production release in OC-192. Key features for this buffer include a -3dB bandwidth >7GHz, 45ps max rise/fall time, less than 1.5ps RMS jitter, and internal 50-ohm termination.

"Micrel has always been a technology rich semiconductor company. The addition of our new SiGe process is another indication of Micrel's commitment to provide advanced process technologies in-house in support of its best-of-class products," said Ray Zinn, President and CEO.

The SY58016 is available in a 16-pin (3x3mm) MLF package or die form. Operation is guaranteed from a 3.3V +/-10% power supply over the -40degC to +85degC industrial temperature range. Pricing is approximately $17.26 (10,000-unit quantity, FOB USA).

Micrel's current communications products address SONET OC-3/OC-12/OC-48, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and digital video requirements with solutions including AnyRate(TM) clock and data recovery devices, fiber optic post amplifiers and laser drivers, SuperLite(TM) and ECL Pro(TM) families of precision CML, clock and logic ICs.
