Clutch/Brakes feature oil-shear design.

Press Release Summary:

Posidyne X Series is engineered for up to 10 hp drives and is available in torque ratings from 100 to 1000 lb-in. Units transmit torque by shearing automatic transmission fluid between multiple friction discs, minimizing wear while absorbing heat of engagement, and dissipating it through housing. Pneumatic actuation allows precise control of torque and engagement speeds with simple pressure change. Double C-face mounting and clamped-split quill allow drop-in, bolt-up installation.

New Off-the-Shelf Oil-Shear Posidyne X Series Establishes New Performance Level Dry Clutch/Brakes Can't Reach

Tested to 40 million cycles, it offers affordable speed boost and high reliability for packaging machinery, material handling, food processing, automotive

September 2002 - Force Control's new Posidyne X Series brings high-cycle performance to OEM and MRO applications with an economical, value-engineered oil-shear design. A clutch/brake bulldog, the Posidyne X provides two to ten times higher cycle rates and bullet-proof reliability for extreme 24/7 manufacturing - all at 50% lower per-cycle cost than "disposable" dry clutch/brakes.

The Posidyne X Series is ruggedly engineered for up to 10 hp drives, and is available in torque ratings from 100 to 1000 in.lb. Ideal for case packers, cartoners, fillers, indexing conveyors and other high-cycle-rate machinery, it offers Original Equipment Muscle for machine designers, providing:

o 20 msec. response and 60-88% lower internal inertia for ultra-quick acceleration with maximum usable horsepower;
o higher performance levels - 200 CPM not unusual - and greater reliability for new machine designs;
o hostile or washdown environment installation, standard cast iron housings with hard coat epoxy finish, optional nickel-plated shafts and Steel It finish available; and
o superior stopping and positioning precision.

The Posidyne X Series eliminates MRO headaches for plant managers with:

o service life tested to more than 40 million cycles, eliminating frequent changeouts inherent with dry clutch/brakes;
o four to five times higher thermal rating for fade-free stopping and no burned clutches;
o only annual oil change required for maintenance; and
o zero adjustments.

New manufacturing techniques make high-performance oil-shear technology - previously affordable only for special applications - lower-in-cost and quickly available for general insdustry. The newly engineered Posidyne X series comes in four off-the-shelf standard models - X1, X2, X3 and X4 - to cover the most popular clutch/brake size ranges. They are available in horizontal, vertical-input down, and vertical-input up versions for maximum installation versatility.

Force Control's proprietary oil-shear technology has proven itself in the toughest production environments, including automotive, lumber, building products, food processing and warehousing. Posidyne X Series clutch-brakes transmit torque by shearing automatic transmission fluid between multiple friction discs. The recirculating fluid minimizes wear while absorbing the heat of engagement, dissipating it through the housing. High thermal capacity virtually eliminates torque fade and provides excellent positioning repeatability in cycling applications.

The oil-shear design provides inherent "cushioning" that reduces shock loads on motors and other machine components to save on maintenance and downtime. It also saves energy by reducing high starting inrush current and associated power factor imbalance. Pneumatic actuation makes it easy to precisely control both torque and engagement speeds with a simple pressure change, as well as adjust for rapid or soft starts/stops. Two logic types are available - air-set clutch/spring-set brake, and air-set clutch/air-set brake.

Convenient double C-face mounting and handy clamped-split quill allow drop-in, bolt-up installation. The clamped-split quill design ensures trouble-free service in high-cycle-rate production. It eliminates play between keyway, key and input quill shaft to assure long service life.
