Class D Amplifiers integrate anticlipping and voltage limiting.

Press Release Summary:

Available in 2 x 12 W, 2 x 20 W, and 1 x 40 W configurations, MAX98400 Series features anticlipping circuit that avoids clipping by automatically reducing amplifier's gain when supply voltage is insufficient to deliver desired output voltage. Thermal foldback prevents unwanted thermal shutdown events by reducing output signal when internal junction temperature exceeds +120°C. Specified over -40 to +85°C extended temperature range, devices are suited for TVs, notebooks, and desktop PCs.

Class D Amplifiers Integrate Anticlipping and Voltage Limiting to Ensure Robust Product Designs

Class D amps prevent clipping, protect speakers from damaging output voltages.

Maxim's MAX98400 family integrates anticlipping, voltage-limiting, and thermal-foldback technologies to improve audio quality and robustness in TVs, desktops, and portable electronic products.

SUNNYVALE, CA - Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX98400, a family of filterless Class D amplifiers available in 2 x 12W, 2 x 20W, and 1 x 40W configurations. Anticlipping circuitry avoids clipping by automatically reducing the amplifier's gain when the supply voltage is insufficient to deliver the desired output voltage. Voltage limiting prevents damage when the supply voltage outputs more power than the speaker can handle. A pin-selectable mono/stereo mode changes the MAX98400A from a stereo 20W to mono 40W amplifier, while the MAX98400B is a stereo 12W amplifier. The combination of low EMI and integrated protection features makes the MAX98400 amplifiers ideal for TVs, notebooks, and all-in-one desktop applications.

The MAX98400 devices also feature thermal foldback to prevent unwanted thermal-shutdown events. Thermal foldback reduces the output signal when the internal junction temperature exceeds +120°C. This keeps the IC safe, while avoiding thermal-shutdown cycling, which would otherwise appear as a system malfunction to the end customer. Additionally, this amplifier family features short-circuit and thermal-overload protection, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and shutdown control.

The MAX98400 amplifiers are fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. The MAX98400A is packaged in a small, 6mm x 6mm, lead-free, 36-pin TQFN and the MAX98400B in a 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin TQFN. Prices start at $1.20 for the MAX98400A and $0.95 for the MAX98400B (1000-up, FOB USA).
