City of Madison, WI Receives ITS Wisconsin Project of the Year Award

Centracs® Adaptive reduces travel time 22 percent and provides incident response capabilities

Anaheim, Calif.  – Econolite today announced that the City of Madison, WI (in association with Strand Associates) was recently awarded the ITS Wisconsin Project of the Year Award for the "Verona Road Adaptive Signal Control Deployment" (http://www.itswisconsin.org). The City of Madison deployed Centracs® Adaptive ahead of major highway improvement construction – Verona Road (US 18/151) Project – to help better manage alternate route/bypass traffic along an already high-volume corridor. Installed in July 2014, Centracs Adaptive has been validated to reduce travel times by up to 22 percent and provides the City with excellent incident response capabilities.

The City of Madison worked proactively to address the projected 20 percent increase of traffic volume through the alternate route – McKee/Fish Hatchery Rd. corridor – by turning to Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology, particularly adaptive signal control. "Having recently timed this corridor, we were very pleased with the effectiveness of Centracs Adaptive to significantly reduce travel times even over a newly timed corridor," said Assistant City Traffic Engnineer Scott Langer, P.E. "You might expect a 22 percent improvement over previously non-timed signals, but this kind of result to recently timed signals speaks volumes to the legitimacy of adaptive signal control in improving travel times."

Another benefit Centracs Adaptive provides is its incident response capability. On October 21, 2014, a main highway closure during the morning commute caused an approximate 40 percent traffic volume increase on the McKee/Fish Hatchery Rd. corridor. Centracs Adaptive was able to immediately recognize the increase in traffic volume and bring the travel time back to nominal conditions within 30 minutes.

Centracs Adaptive is a module integrated in Centracs ATMS. For this project, the City of Madison deployed Centracs Adaptive to 13 signals along the McKee/Fish Hatchery Rd. corridor. Partnering with the City of Madison were the City of Fitchburg, WI, Dane County, WI, Wisconsin DOT, Strand Associates, and Traffic Control Corporation (Econolite distributor).
