Circular Over-Mold integrates XLR connector and PCB.

Press Release Summary:

Circular over-mold for PCB with Switchcraft XLR connector furthers capabilities of current PCB and connector design by broadening type of connectors that can be integrated with PCB. Integration of XLR and PCB into one over-molded unit streamlines connector's contours, which disguise internal PCB. Inner cap, designed out of hard durometer resin, serves as structure for over-mold, which provides aesthetics of part and integrates strain relief section into mold.

ISC Engineering Develops New Circular Over- Mold for a PCB with Switchcraft XLR Connector

ISC has integrated the functionality of a very durable and cost effective XLR connector with the capabilities of a PCB. The new design integrates both the XLR and PCB into one over-molded unit. The new design is streamline to the connector’s contours which disguise the internal PCB.

PCB’s are difficult to over-mold directly due to raised components which can be pushed off during the molding process. To resolve this issue an inner cap is designed out of a hard durometer resin that acts like an exoskeleton to the board. The cap serves as a structure for the over-mold which provides the aesthetics of the part and integrates a strain relief section into the mold.

This new design furthers the capabilities of current PCB and connector design. Typically PCB’s and connectors are molded separately or are designed as one singular component. This particular design integrates two isolated parts into what looks like one singular part. What this does is broadens the type of connectors that can be integrated with a PCB.
