Bourns Announces Breakthrough Transient Blocking Unit Circuit Protection Technology

Revolutionary New Circuit Protection Devices Cost-Effectively Block and Prevent Surges to Safeguard Sensitive Electronic Systems

RIVERSIDE, Calif., Nov. 10 -- Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the availability of a breakthrough line of Transient Blocking Unit (TBU) circuit protection products. As the first new approach to electronics circuit protection in over a decade, Bourns' new TBU technology is designed to block a transient through a current disconnecting mechanism rather than diverting or shunting the surge to ground. This blocking technology virtually eliminates latency in the circuit protection design which results in surge protection for sensitive electronic equipment within nanoseconds. Bourns' new TBU devices provide extremely effective, wide bandwidth circuit protection against lightning, power induction, power cross and short circuit events in a wide variety of Ethernet, Voice over IP (VoIP), Very High Speed DSL (VDSL) and Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) applications. The TBU product is also used by customers in industrial, test and instrumentation, sensors, and transportation applications.

Bourns' new TBU line includes four product families: The P-G series designed for voice protection, P40 for VDSL protection, the P-U series for Ethernet protection and the C series for general electronics protection. The P-G series meets very high surge requirements and prevents arcing and other damage to components. Offering very high bandwidth for VDSL and VDSL2 applications, the P40 TBU products meet rate-reach requirements. The P-U series is designed specifically for Ethernet applications by protecting against both lightning and power cross events. All Bourns TBU products are resettable for full functionality after multiple fault events and offer a high bandwidth of 3 gigahertz (GHz). While Bourns' new TBU line exceeds system circuit protection requirements, the products are also a cost-effective solution that reduces warranty returns. Specifically designed for overvoltage and overcurrent protection in telecommunication, industrial and data communications systems, TBU technology was first announced by Fultec Semiconductor which Bourns acquired in October 2008.

"As the markets for Ethernet, VoIP, VDSL and GPON solutions continues to grow, new circuit protection technologies will be in high demand. Adding this revolutionary line of TBU products to Bourns already comprehensive portfolio of circuit protection solutions, we are uniquely positioned to help our customers choose the optimal circuit protection product to meet their application requirements," said Dr. Erik Meijer, vice president of circuit protection at Bourns. "We are excited to offer groundbreaking new technology that provides cost-effective and highly reliable surge protection for even the most sensitive latest generation systems."

Bourns' P-G series, P40, P-U series and C series TBU products are available now. As a pricing reference, the C Series products are priced at $0.75 each in 10,000 piece quantities.
