Eaton Remotely Operated Circuit Breaker Racking Device Helps to Reduce Arc Flash Exposure and Enhance Workplace Safety

PITTSBURGH … Power management company Eaton today announced the release of a motorized, remotely operated circuit breaker racking device designed to enhance safety for operators of medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear. By providing a means to remotely insert or remove drawout circuit breakers used in Eaton VacClad-W switchgear, the MR2 remote racking device increases the distance between an operator and live components to mitigate the impacts of arc flash exposure.

Arc flash safety is paramount in the design of medium voltage switchgear and Eaton continues to develop equipment designed to minimize arc faults and the effect they may have on personnel and equipment.

“An arc flash can occur when operators are connecting and disconnecting circuit breakers,” said Javvad Qasimi, product manager at Eaton. “The MR2 provides a valuable line of defense between personnel and the switchgear during this critical time.”

Historically, operators were required to manually move switchgear circuit breakers into place with a hand crank. With the MR2 system, an operator can use remote controls to select, disconnect, test or connect circuit breaker positions.

The device’s motor is installed inside the switchgear to negate the need for lifting and aligning an external motor from the outside, enhancing safety and productivity. Control capabilities are provided through a microprocessor-based controller card, located below the drive motor, which interfaces with an external hand-held controller, external pushbuttons, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, or Modbus® communications. The system is also designed to allow manual racking of the circuit breaker if needed.

The hand-held controller is available with indicating lights to indicate position and status of the circuit breaker. Logic is built into the device to sense interference issues, and it is designed to not accept a command to connect a circuit breaker that has experienced interference until after it has been moved to the disconnect position. The system also detects errors including overcurrent, over temperature and communication faults, and provides suggested corrective actions to enhance reliable operations.

The device is available for new switchgear installations and can also be retrofitted to fit existing Eaton VacClad-W switchgear. To learn more about the MR2 motorized remote racking device, visitwww.eaton.com/mr2.
