Chromatography Column offers biodiesel analysis.

Press Release Summary:

Meeting ASTM D6584 and EN-14105 standards, Select Biodiesel for Glycerides, UltiMetal(TM) capillary GC (gas chromatography) column analyzes free and total glycerol in biodiesel. Methods are conducted using high resolution capillary GC at column temperatures of more than 350°C. Column offers low column bleed and structural robustness to withstand rigors of long term high temperature use, providing separation performance and column lifetime required to minimize unwanted/unexpected downtime.

Varian, Inc. Releases UltiMetal(TM) Columns for Biodiesel Analysis

CHICAGO, Feb. 26 /- Varian, Inc. (NASDAQ:VARI) announced today the release of a new UltiMetal(TM) capillary GC (gas chromatography) column, Select Biodiesel for Glycerides, an advanced solution designed to address the challenges of industry standard methods ASTM D6584 and EN-14105.

Capillary GC columns are used by analytical chemists in the biofuels industry to assess biodiesel composition and quality to ensure that it conforms to standard specifications. Of all the standard methods used for biodiesel analysis, those based on GC are the most common. Varian's family of Select Biodiesel capillary GC columns is designed to cover a complete range of analyses including methanol and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMES).

Varian's Select Biodiesel for Glycerides is an UltiMetal GC column that specifically addresses the analysis of free glycerin and total glycerol in biodiesel. These methods are conducted using high resolution capillary GC at very high column temperatures (> 350 degrees C). These temperatures not only increase the likelihood of severe column phase bleed leading to inconsistent results, but also premature column breakage due to repetitive, high- temperature thermal cycling.

Compared to conventional fused silica columns, Varian's unique UltiMetal columns are significantly more resistant to breakage. These columns offer both extremely low column bleed and the structural robustness to withstand the rigors of long term high temperature use, resulting in a system that offers the separation performance and column lifetime required to minimize unwanted or unexpected downtime.

"The UltiMetal glycerides column allows analysts of biofuels to spend more time gathering information and less time replacing broken columns," said Martin O'Donoghue, Senior Vice President, Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "This addition to our GC product portfolio allows Varian to offer a complete solution for the analysis of biofuels, including gas chromatographs, auto- samplers, detectors, columns, and software, training and support services."
