Choice Cable TV of Puerto Rico Completes System Deployment of a 400 Gb/s Backbone Delivering VOD Services

MSO Selects OpVista's "nWave" Carrier Ethernet Transport Platform to enable Infrastructure for Fully Flexible, Converged Services Network

MILPITAS, Calif., June 4 / / - Customers in the 30 Puerto Rican municipalities served by Choice Cable TV, based in Ponce, will soon enjoy enhanced VOD (video on demand) and multiple HDTV channels thanks in part to a newly installed backbone network featuring the "nWave" optical network, with equipment manufactured and installed by OpVista.

OpVista's nWave gives Choice Cable TV a fully flexible, point-to-multipoint 40 wavelength DWDM network, which can support rapidly growing customer demand for emerging high-bandwidth Digital Video, IP- and Ethernet-based services with faster service turn-up.

"The completion of this core capacity upgrade enables Choice Cable TV to provide thousands of our subscribers in the Southern and Western areas of Puerto Rico, with what we believe to be the best package of services on the island," said Richard Zorin, Vice President of Technical Operations. "Using OpVista's equipment will boost our competitive posture for years to come."

OpVista designed the "nWave" CET Platform so that service providers can exponentially expand the number of available wavelengths with their existing infrastructure (fiber and electronics). As such, OpVista's approach represents a departure from other recently introduced CET strategies that require "forklift" upgrades or lack the capacity and scalability to support true "next-generation" services.

OpVista incorporates patented and completely standards-compliant techniques to exponentially expand the number of available wavelengths in the network - in a completely reconfigurable (ROADM) setting - and then add higher order network intelligence to create a service-independent transport network. Such a network avoids the cost and inflexibility of multiple pre-configured, single-purpose networks that often result in complex overlay situations beset with multiple network management schemes.

"OpVista is very pleased to be working with Choice Cable TV to offer next generation services," said John Giarolo, SVP of Worldwide Sales. "The OpVista2000 offers carriers cost-effective bandwidth while also ensuring that future needs can be met without forklift upgrades."

Choice Cable TV is the leading Cable TV and High Speed Internet provider in 30 municipalities in the South and West regions of Puerto Rico, covering from Quebradillas to Maunabo. Choice has its corporate offices in Ponce, and Customer Service offices in Aguadilla, Mayaguez, San German, Ponce and Guayama. It offers more than 250 channels, High Definition Television, five High Speed Internet options, Video on Demand and has a local origination channel: Choice TV Channel 8.

About OpVista

The OpVista nWave Optical Networking platform turns existing network infrastructure into carrier Ethernet-ready networks easily and cost-effectively. Universally compatible with existing metro and regional DWDM systems and fiber plant, the nWave product family can quadruple the number of available wavelengths in order to meet exploding consumer and business demand for high-bandwidth video, such as HDTV, and IP-based services. Furthermore, using OpVista's unique optical multicasting solution, carriers can deliver bandwidth in single wavelength increments to any node at any time. As carriers make the transition to IP and Ethernet-based services, OpVista is there to help carriers realize greater revenue and reduce both operating and capital expenditures. OpVista is based in Milpitas, CA. For more information, visit opvista.com/.
