National Semiconductor Strengthens High-Speed Analog Interfaces With Three New Chips From Its Industry-Leading LVDS Product Line

New Dual 18-bit Serializer, Crosspoint Switch and Repeater with Failsafe Extend the Reach and Drive of High-Speed Interfaces

Electronica, MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 9 -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) announced today the addition of three new high-speed analog interface chips to its industry leading portfolio of LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) products.

Designed to extend the reach and drive of high-speed analog interfaces, the SCAN921821 dual 18-bit LVDS serializer features pre-emphasis, JTAG, and the industry's highest ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection. In addition to JTAG, the SCAN90CP02 1.5 Gbps 2 x 2 LVDS crosspoint switch features very high ESD protection and configurable pre-emphasis. And finally, National added failsafe mode to its popular DS90LV110T 1:10 LVDS repeater.

"Features like 15,000-volts of ESD protection, configurable pre-emphasis, JTAG and failsafe broaden the relevance of high-speed interface chips for new and more demanding applications," said Jeff Waters, product line director for the Communications Interface group at National. "National continues to drive this market through continuous innovation and a broad and growing portfolio."

LVDS Dual 18-bit Serializer with Pre-Emphasis and JTAG

National's SCAN921821 is a dual 15-66 MHz serializer with pre-emphasis and IEEE 1149.1 JTAG. Each serializer handles payloads up to 1.188 Gbps for a total of 2.376 Gbps throughput. Cables and backplanes introduce losses that create inter-symbol interference (ISI) deterministic jitter and reduce interconnect performance. The SCAN921821 has programmable pre-emphasis up to 6dB that actually reduces ISI jitter, dramatically extending interconnect speed and distance. The SCAN921821 also features testability with integrated IEEE 1149.1 JTAG, at-speed BIST to reduce board test and test development costs, hot plug protection and a remarkable 15 kV of ESD protection on the LVDS pins.

LVDS 2 x 2 LVDS Crosspoint Switch

National's SCAN90CP02 is a 2 x 2 LVDS non-blocking crosspoint switch with programmable pre-emphasis that operates at speeds up to 1.5 Gbps. Its pre- emphasis, superior signal quality and greater than 6.5 kV of ESD protection make it ideal for FPGA (field programmable gate-arrays) and ASIC (application- specific integrated circuits) devices. Programmable pre-emphasis boosts FPGA and ASIC LVDS signals over lossy backplanes and cables, while the impressive 6.5 kV ESD protection shields these expensive components from static discharge during hot plugging. Its 2 x 2 non-blocking architecture also makes the SCAN90CP02 ideal for redundancy and other switching applications. The flexible SCAN90CP02 input is electrically compatible with LVDS, LVPECL (low voltage positive emitter coupled logic), CML (common mode logic) and PECL signaling.

LVDS 1:10 Repeater with Failsafe

National's DS90LV110AT LVDS 1:10 repeater cost-effectively makes 10 copies of a clock or data signal, dramatically reducing system costs. Many systems require extra copies of clock or data signals from FPGAs, ASICs or SerDes (serializers/deserializers). Instead of duplicating these signals utilizing expensive FPGA/ASIC LVDS internal resources and pins, the DS90LV110AT creates 10 copies cost-effectively with superior signal quality. In addition, the DS90LV110AT's input failsafe forces the 10 outputs to a known high state if the input signal is shorted or missing. The flexible DS90LV110AT input is electrically compatible with LVDS, LVPECL, CML and PECL signaling.

Pricing and Availability

Available in production quantities now, the SCAN921821 is offered in a 10mm x 10mm FBGA package and is priced at $9.95 each in quantities of 1,000.
