ALLENTOWN, Pa., Oct. 10 // -- Xiamen, China-based Amoi Electronics Company, Ltd. (Shanghai Stock Exchange: 600057.SS) has started shipping production quantities of six of the company's next-generation smart phones and feature phones. The phones are powered by the Agere Systems (NYSE:AGR) Vision(TM) X115 chip set platform.

The platform consists of semiconductor chips, as well as an extensive set of multimedia software and robust protocol stack software. The platform makes these Amoi phones more feature-rich, better-performing, smaller and more affordable than alternative offerings.

The platform equips Amoi's new phones with compact disk (CD) quality sound, high-quality video (QVGA resolution) and a 2 megapixel camera. All this can be performed without needing costly applications processors or multimedia companion chips -- a credit to Agere's Vision architecture.

The X115 solution includes high-end multimedia features such as H.263 and H.264 video capability. These features enable QVGA resolution movie clips to be played and QVGA video clips to be recorded at a competitive 15 frames per second, and a stereo equalizer for its integrated CD quality stereo outputs.

These features also support technologies such as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3), Windows Media Audio (WMA), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), aacPlus and Enhanced aacPlus audio formats.

This Vision architecture also enables a top of class JavaBenchmark 2.0 score of 425 with a Quarter Common Intermediate Format resolution display. This enables excellent graphics, gaming and user interface experiences.

Because of the Vision X115's high level of integration, Agere's platform can reduce a cell phone's overall component count by more than 100 and shrink integrated circuit bill of materials costs and footprint size by up to 20 percent.

"Agere has enabled us with the latest expansion in mobile phone technology, bringing our customers the best experience," said Mr. Li Xiaozhong, CEO of Amoi Electronics. "Agere's dual core Vision X115 chipset solution, featuring two separate processors, a dedicated communications core and dedicated applications core (for business, entertainment and multimedia functions), enhances the system's stability, coordination and response speed.

"This rare combination of smart phone offerings, featuring high-quality multimedia all within one chip set, addresses a key trend in the smart phone industry," Mr. Xiaozhong added. "Agere has achieved this combined offering in a way that is crucial to Amoi's smart phone business success. The smart phone is a key strategic product for our company."

By the end of 2006, smart phones will make up about 20 percent to 30 percent of Amoi's product lines and will be among the most profitable ones, according to SinoCast.

Agere is a long-term supplier to Amoi in cell phone projects ranging from lower- to higher-end models. Agere's collaboration with Amoi has enabled the handset maker to deliver to market Amoi's new series of smart and feature phones. These include the E601, E603, E605, E65, A3 and M690.

"Amoi is an important player in the global cell phone market, and the fact that the company is shipping these impressive feature-rich handsets proves their success delivering to market higher-quality cell phones at more affordable costs," said Denis Regimbal, executive vice president and general manager of Agere's Mobility Division. "By separating the communications and applications processing domains with our Vision architecture, we have enabled smaller phones, faster time to market and rapid integration of new applications, without compromising a mobile phone's performance."

Agere's Vision X115 platform adheres to the GSM wireless standards: General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE). GPRS processes data at about 80 kilobits per second and EDGE does the same function at about 234 kilobits per second.
