Chemir Tests Products For BPA

April 24, 2008, St. Louis, MO - Chemir Analytical Services tests bottles, containers and other plastic products for potential leaching of bisphenol A (BPA). BPA, the organic compound (CH3)2C(C6H4OH)2, is a monomer present in most polycarbonate materials and is a known endocrine disrupter. The current controversy centers on whether BPA leaching from containers causes harmful contamination in beverages or food products.

Chemir Analytical Services utilizes analytical instrumentation such as GC/MS, LC/MSn, and HPLC/UV to accurately characterize, identify, and quantify extractables and leachables. "The chance that BPA could leach into a consumable product depends on many factors, including the food product itself, as well as the container's age, condition and how it was manufactured" says Kevin Trankler, Ph.D., Director of Technical Services of Chemir Analytical Services. "These complex investigations require testing the product under varying conditions designed to stress the material in an effort to simulate wear conditions." Chemir also specializes in deformulation (reverse engineering) of plastics and polymers, offering complete product breakdown of components, including the detection and quantitation of bisphenol A (BPA).
