Chemical Passivation Service targets porous metal parts.

Press Release Summary:

Utilizing Crest Ultrasonics Station, Mott provides complete chemical passivation of customers' parts in conformance with ASTM A967 Nitric 2 requirements. Automated passivation treatment removes free-iron and other contaminants from porous metal frits, discs, and cups up to 1 in. diameter. Supplemental processing is critical to customers in instrumentation, medical, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage industries as well others concerned with product cleanliness and surface condition.

Original Press Release:

Mott Corporation Offers Passivation for Porous Metal Products

FARMINGTON, CT, - Mott Corporation, the leading producer of porous metal products and filters, is pleased to announce the most recent enhancement of our capabilities with the installation of an automated passivation line for the processing of porous metal parts. The installation of a new Crest Ultrasonics Station now enables Mott to complete chemical passivation of customers' parts in conformance with ASTM A967 Nitric 2 requirements, completely in house. This automated passivation treatment is available for porous metal frits, discs, and cups up to 1" in diameter.

The passivation process removes free-iron from stainless steel. When stainless steel products are manufactured, free-iron is generally transferred to the surface of the material from other processing operations. Free-iron can readily oxidize forming visible rust on the surface of the part. The passivation process is a chemical treatment with a specific acid formulation that removes this free-iron and other contaminants from the porous metal. The passivation treatment also improves the surface condition of the stainless steel by dissolving iron that has been embedded on the surface during forming or machining. This supplemental processing is critical to customers in the instrumentation, medical, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage industries as well others concerned with product cleanliness and surface condition.

Applications for porous metal range from filtration of gases and liquids, to flow control, diffusion, sparging, fluidizing, venting, web transport and wicking. The distinct advantage of Mott metal over other materials includes uniform and high-precision porosity, strength, durability, corrosion resistance, tolerance to high temperatures and pressure, and cleanability. No other media provides the level of integrity necessary for repeated cleaning and re-use that porous metal offers.

Mott routinely partners with a wide array of customers on the development of innovative porous metal solutions in a variety of industries including chromatography, instrumentation, aerospace, medical device, biotechnology, chemical, petrochemical, photovoltaic, food and beverage, renewable energy, semiconductor, and environmental.
