Rugged 8U System Offers 21 Slots and Advanced Monitoring for cPCI and VME64X Applications

COLUMBUS, OH, November 18, 2002-Tracewell Systems, Inc., a world-class electronic packaging manufacturer, has introduced the S36-8U chassis for CompactPCI and VME64x. Designed for military and government applications, the new S36 offers the systems designer great flexibility in configuration due to its smart modular design. The S36 platform is designed to meet the stringent EMC limits of MIL-STD 461 and shock requirements of MIL-STD 901. This rugged welded unit extends Tracewell's field proven and tested military, COTS, and government capabilities to larger and more complex systems, and provides full system monitoring capabilities.

Efficient Design for Rugged Environments. At the core of the S36 is a welded 'tub' chassis which benefits from a sophisticated design that eliminates the need for extensive butt-welding, yielding a far more dimensionally stable chassis. The unique hinged door design utilizes a compression seal for excellent EMI shielding to MIL-STD 461 Tempest levels while providing clearance for a full 21-slots. Internal access and configuration within the chassis, often a problem in rugged designs, is greatly improved due to a fully removable internal subrack, upper access panel, and rear panel structure. The ultra-low profile design occupies just 8U of rack space and provides exceptional front-to-rear cooling flow.

Range of Backplanes. The S36 supports a broad range of backplane options up to a full 21-slots, where other such designs might typically only provide 18 slots. The choice of standard backplanes includes CompactPCI (cPCI) or VME64x slot size ranging from 8 to 21 slots. Multi-backplane configurations are also easily supported within this chassis.

Flexible Power.A host of power options include wide-range AC input with 400Hz capability, as well as 24 and 48VDC input utilizing Tracewell's latest TTX power technology. Standard bulk power for up to 1000 watts can be supported, while redundant
hot-swap power is also available ranging from 350 - 700W. All chassis controls including input circuit breaker and power control are conveniently located and protected just inside of the hinged front door.

High Reliability in the Field. To help maintain critical power and cooling operating conditions within the chassis, Tracewell has enhanced its remote and local monitoring capabilities as an optional feature on the S36. Tracewell's microprocessor-based System Management Module (SMM) relies on a "PIC" processor-based monitoring system, which allows for greater flexibility and software control, particularly useful in remote monitoring
applications. The SMM can monitor critical system elements including voltages, temperatures, current, and fan speed and report present status and alarm conditions via RS-232, Ethernet, and I2C communications links, plus VFD/LCD or LED output. Ethernet capability can also be provided. Monitoring capability quickly repays its cost by enabling service personnel to remotely monitor system performance and to tailor maintenance schedules for improved efficiency and reduced downtime.

As with all Tracewell products, the S36 can be adapted per Tracewell's ABC Modification Program to support customer specific requirements, including board-level integration.

Price and Availability.Tracewell's S36 versions start at $12,500 and ships 8 weeks ARO.
