Taiyo Yuden Gears for Mass Production of World's Thinnest Multilayer Ceramic Piezoelectric Speakers

0.7mm-thick speakers provide high sound-quality and pressure without magnets, are 30-50% lighter and lower power consuming than standard dynamic speakers

** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE **

Schaumburg, IL-February 18, 2004-Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. announces the imminent mass production of its new MLS series of multilayer ceramic piezoelectric speakers, a very timely development that will significantly impact the further miniaturization of 3G cell phones, MPEG players, laptops, digital cameras, PDAs and other high-end portable electronics. 1,000,000 units per month will roll out of the fab by the end of Q1 2004, with 2,000,000 MLS units per month expected by Q1 2005. Available in three sizes (see table below), the MLS series' piezoelectric technology eliminates the magnet that all standard dynamic speakers require for operation. This factor, combined with Taiyo Yuden's material science and multilayer fabrication expertise, allows the MLS to be manufactured to a standard thickness of only 0.7mm (less than 0.03"). As the world's thinnest speaker, the MLS is compact enough for installation in confined spaces down to 1.0mm, making it ideal for use in next-generation ultra-slim portable electronic devices.

The structural design of the MLS speaker incorporates a recently developed piezoelectric material utilizing Taiyo Yuden's low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) technology and multilayer fabrication techniques. The resulting lineup of speakers offers sound quality and pressure levels matching those of dynamic speakers. Moreover, the MLS is 30 to 50% lighter and consumes up to 50% less power-greatly extending end-device battery life. Unlike dynamic speakers that need internal space to amplify sound output, the innovative acoustic design of the MLS relies only on its own output power to maintain sound pressure levels and quality. The fact that the MLS requires no magnet for operation like dynamic speakers do, facilitates end-device featurization by allowing spaces formerly too constricted for use-such as behind the LCD-to be utilized for additional functionality.

The MLS is an ideal solution for emerging high-demand applications such as the convergence of contactless ID (RFID), credit cards and cellular telephones. Here, magnetic leakage from dynamic speakers poses a serious risk of data error or loss. The MLS's "magnet-free" piezoelectric operation, however, eliminates this concern entirely.
