Press Release Summary:
Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Ceramic Heater Pill provides instant heat within seconds of turning on cold car, eliminating idle time, which helps save fuel and reduce emissions. It is mounted in finned metal holder that heats up and warms air moved over its surface, and due to its inherent self-regulating characteristics, unit does not overheat. Heater pill can be used as cold start booster to main heating system, or as rear seat heater in larger vehicles.

Murata Electronics Announces New Application for Positive Temperature Coefficient Heater Pill
Instant Heat Solution Provides Significant Energy Savings In A Low Cost Package
Smyrna, GA, October20, 2008- Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today announced a new application for its Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Ceramic Heater Pill - providing instant heat within seconds of turning on a cold car. While makers of higher end cars can justify the cost of heated seats, many of the medium and small-sized cars do not have this as an option because it is financially prohibitive. With Murata's new concept for its PTC Pill, engineers now have a cost effective solution that bridges instant heat demands and consumer expectations.
"We are proposing this heating application, not only for instant comfort on a cold day, but also for environmental reasons," said Peter Tiller, Senior Group Product Manager for Murata Electronics North America. "In the winter months, a large number of people start their cars and let them idle unoccupied, waiting for the existing heating system to warm-up the car. If we could eliminate this idle time and provide instant comfort, we could save fuel and reduce emissions. It's a win-win situation for car companies and consumers alike."
Ceramic heaters have recently become popular as portable home space heater and as bathroom heaters due to their inherent safety and fast heating capability. The PTC pill is mounted in a finned metal holder that heats up and warms air moved over its surface. As a low cost heating source, the ceramic PTC pill will never overheat because of its inherent self-regulating characteristics, enabling several automotive heating applications. As a cold start booster to the main heating system, it can quickly generate heated air and then be shut down once the main heater has reached temperature. It can also be used as a rear seat heater in larger vehicles or function as the main heater in electric or other vehicles where traditional heaters may not be practical.
Samples of Murata's PTC Pill and casing type are available for $0.50 to $10.00 per piece, with an average lead time of approximately five weeks. Additional purchasing info can be found online at www.murata-northamerica.com.
