Celanese Advances Eco-Friendly Paint Technology with Expanded EcoVAE® Family of Vinyl Emulsions

Combining performance, low VOCs and formulation flexibility, Celanese's VAE products offer paint makers exceptional value

Charlotte, North Carolina - Celanese Emulsion Polymers introduces two new members to the EcoVAE® line of vinyl acetate/ethylene resins to crowds at the American Coatings Show (ACS) 2010. Originally introduced at ACS 2008, the EcoVAE® line is increasingly the vehicle of choice in a growing number of environmentally friendly paint and coatings products. Now, manufacturers have even more options with the introduction of EcoVAE® 405 and 408 emulsions in addition to EcoVAE® 401 - a technology proven to be more durable than even the best acrylic emulsions.

To showcase all of the features of the EcoVAE® product line, Celanese created the EcoVAE® Criteria Checklist in 2009. "Every EcoVAE® emulsion must meet each eco-friendly properties listed, including extremely low odor, APE-free, low residual monomer level, the ability to formulate low to near zero VOC coatings and the ability to achieve green certifications," said Jared Elliott, Celanese Paint and Coating Marketing Manager. "All of these factors yield a VAE resin that enables formulators to create eco-friendly paints that today's discerning consumer and paint professional want to buy. Both EcoVAE® 405 and 408 meet all of these criteria and more." All of the products in the EcoVAE® family are based on supply-stable vinyl technology, which has been reported by the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) to have a lower carbon footprint than alternative traditional resin systems such as acrylics.

The two newest EcoVAE® emulsions introduced at this year's American Coatings Show raise the performance bar. EcoVAE® 405 boasts even greater durability over EcoVAE® 401, allowing formulators to develop products for use in tough environments such as kitchens and playrooms where frequent washing occurs. In fact, in numerous lab tests against nationally ranked paints, interior flat paints made with EcoVAE 405 demonstrate better wet scrub resistance than paints based on 100% acrylic emulsions.

Surviving the Elements

EcoVAE 408 was designed to be formulated into freeze-thaw stable paints for contractors and DIY consumers in cold climates. Even left in freezing temperatures, paints formulated with EcoVAE® 408 maintain their stability up to five freeze-thaw cycles. Dr. Rajeev Farwaha, senior scientist at Celanese, is presenting on this topic at the concurrent American Coatings Conference. "EcoVAE® 408 is the perfect balance of good wet scrub performance, low odor and freeze-thaw stability," said Farwaha.

"Our newest additions to the EcoVAE® line represent the cutting-edge in environmentally friendly emulsions for the paint industry. By raising performance to new heights, we're giving paint makers the ability to deliver products that are environmentally compliant but don't sacrifice the performance requirements consumers demand," said Elliott. "EcoVAE® 405 and 408 will undoubtedly help our customer develop novel paints and coatings with great consumer appeal," said Elliott.
