Cedar Point Communications Announces First Wireline-Wimax Deployment of SAFARI C(Cubed)

DERRY, N.H., May 7 -- Cedar Point Communications, Inc., the leader in integrated VoIP switching technologies for service provider and enterprise telecommunications, today announced the initial use of its SAFARI C(Cubed) Multimedia Switching System in a converged wireline and WiMax voice deployment.

Grupo TVCable, the largest cable system operator in Ecuador, has deployed SIP-based services using the SAFARI C(Cubed) platform to an initial base of approximately 300 subscribers in an industrial area adjacent to the city of Guayaquil. The SAFARI C(Cubed) switch is being used to support the delivery of VoIP services via the existing Grupo TVCable HFC infrastructure to residential and business customers elsewhere in Guayaquil.

The Grupo TVCable deployment leverages the unique ability and versatility of SAFARI C(Cubed) to serve as a point of convergence between wireline and wireless environments, and to simultaneously handle a wide array of services, including NCS and SIP-based voice, as well as WiMAX traffic.

"The high degree of flexibility engineered into SAFARI C(Cubed) has been invaluable in the Guayaquil industrial area where it is not practical to run HFC plant," said Jorge Schwartz, CEO of Grupo TVCable. "Because it can simultaneously handle PacketCable and SIP-based voiced services with no modification, we have been able to use a single SAFARI switch to simply and cost-effectively meet all of our voice needs in a highly-diverse system architecture."

"Like many cable operators worldwide, Grupo TVCable needs to use creative approaches to meet the needs of customers in specific geographic areas," said Chris Zanyk, managing director, Latin America for Cedar Point Communications. "By combining their own engineering innovation with the native capabilities of SAFARI C(Cubed), they have been able to create a voice solution that is not limited to their HFC footprint."

In the Grupo TVCable deployment, calls handled by SAFARI C(Cubed) are carried over 3.5 GHz spectrum between WiMax towers and the customer premises. Grupo TVCable anticipates that the deployment ultimately will reach 2,000 customers or more over the next 12-18 months.

The only totally integrated carrier class VoIP switch that incorporates all of the components that make up the voice switching infrastructure, SAFARI C(Cubed) builds value in the network by providing seamless evolution to SIP-based features and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture. SAFARI C(Cubed) provides superior performance and reliability, significantly reducing capital expenditures, system integration and operations costs for cable operators offering telephony services while increasing network integrity, security and privacy.

About TV Cable

The TVCable Group, a privately held corporate group operating wholly within Ecuador, began in 1987, introducing cable television to Ecuador's major cities. Coincident with the implementation of its HFC networks during the mid 90's, the Group branched into leased line and ISP services, turning up both IP and SDH data networks, and today is a leader in all areas of its operations. Voice services were inaugurated 4Q 2005 using both Packetcable and SIP access to the SAFARI C(Cubed).
