SONY LAUNCHES ITS SMALLEST ONE-PIECE COLOR VIDEO CAMERA FOR USE IN MACHINE VISION AND REMOTE MONITORING APPLICATIONS
SAN JOSE (PHOTONICS WEST, Booth #1916), Jan. 22, 2002 - Sony Electronics today demonstrated its new XC-555 ultra-compact, integrated 1/2 type Interline Transfer (IT) CCD color video camera for the first time in the company's booth, #1916, at Photonics West 2002, Jan. 22-24, in San Jose.
Featuring a distinctive one-piece design that eliminates the need for a bulky CCU, the camera can easily be installed into such space-restricted applications as machine vision, multimedia and remote monitoring.
"Our new XC-555 video camera is really an evolution of some very successful existing products-namely the XC-999 and the XC-777 cameras," said Jim Sandy, vice president of the visual imaging products unit at Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "Essentially, we've taken the benefits found in these units and enhanced them with a more sensitive CCD, a smaller package and new camera features like an extended CCD IRIS function and a RS-232 interface control."
In its standard housing, the one-piece video camera measures just 22 x 22 x 75 mm and weighs 60 grams. This simple, compact design allows users to obtain a video output signal by merely providing a 12 V DC power supply. For easy integration into a wide variety of applications, the unit can be removed from its casing and the boards custom configured. In addition, the camera uses a unique, compact NF-mount lens system that can be converted into a flexible C-mount lens.
The XC-555 camera provides 768 x 494 effective pixels with a horizontal resolution of 470 TV lines and 48 dB signal-to-noise. For excellent imaging quality in a broad range of lighting environments, the XC-555 camera has been enhanced with an improved CCD-IRIS function and Automatic Gain Control compared to prior models. These features work together to allow the end-user to deal with an extremely wide variety of lighting options without having to make any manual adjustments to the camera.
The camera is a highly functional DSP camera that can be controlled by a computer remotely via an RS-232 interface. This interface allows for the control of such functions as shutter speed, Red/Blue level, Pedestal, AGC and CCD IRIS. The camera also features external synchronization and VBS and Y/C outputs.
Sony will begin shipping the XC-555 camera in March for a suggested list price of $1,195. The camera is also available in a PAL version (XC-555P).
