Cavium Networks and Intel Collaborate to Provide Optimized Security and Application Oriented Networking Reference Designs

Joint Reference Designs include Intel(R) Architecture processors and Cavium's NITROX(R) and OCTEON(TM) processors with future support for Next Generation Technologies including Geneseo and Intel(R) QuickAssist

CHICAGO, June 18 // - NXTCOMM Forum - Cavium Networks (NASDAQ:CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products which enable intelligent processing for networking, communications and security applications, today announced an initiative targeted at delivering tuned, flexible, scalable and high performance reference designs for the network appliance, unified threat management, and application oriented networking and communication infrastructure market segments as part of a relationship with Intel(R) Corporation. The companies intend to work closely to drive market-leading functionality and performance using Geneseo and Intel(R) QuickAssist Technology incorporated into Intel(R) architecture processors and Cavium's NITROX(R) and OCTEON(TM) security and networking processors. As part of the overall relationship, Cavium Networks has joined the Intel(R) Communications Alliance.

Additional information on the joint reference designs will be provided to press and analysts at the NXTCOMM show in Chicago on June 19, 20 and 21. To schedule a briefing, please contact angel.atondo@caviumnetworks.com.

Market Requirements

Network infrastructure is evolving from being a simple, transport medium that focused on data routing and switching to an intelligent service delivery medium for voice, video and data traffic that needs to be application and content aware. Furthermore, intelligent services need to be delivered with end to end multi-layer security for secure communications and perimeter protection. Network Equipment OEMs use a combination of general purpose processors along with specialized embedded processors to implement systems that enable intelligent networks with secure, Layer 4 to 7 functionality. However, the software and hardware interfaces between the various silicon components are not optimized and require OEMs to develop custom software or experience bottlenecks in efficiency and/or performance.

Platform Benefits

The collaboration between Cavium Networks and Intel is aimed at providing network equipment OEMs with a highly scalable line of tuned reference designs using Intel architecture processors and Cavium NITROX and OCTEON processors. These reference designs will include software drivers, application programming interfaces (APIs), support of Intel QuickAssist Technology and optimized hardware interfaces, including Geneseo. Geneseo consists of a series of enhancements to PCI Express framework to deliver lower latency, higher bandwidths, reduced power consumption and transaction overheads for accelerator devices. Intel QuickAssist Technology consists of a variety of initiatives to support accelerator innovation. The joint-efforts and resulting reference designs will allow OEMs to deploy their R&D resources into value-added software and services and re-use their designs across a scalable range of price and performance points, enabling richer feature-sets, higher-performance and faster time to market.

"Intel is the industry leader in high-performance x86 processors with a compelling roadmap," said Syed Ali, president and CEO, Cavium Networks. "The integration of Intel hardware and software interfaces with our market-leading NITROX and OCTEON processors provide a world-class, scalable platform for our mutual customers and will deliver significant performance, feature and time to market advantages."

"We support Cavium's products as part of Intel architecture-based security and layer 4 to layer 7 reference designs to enable scalable, high-performance systems for our mutual customers. By delivering optimized reference designs our companies will enable greater interoperability between our processors and speed time to market for security and networking applications," said Doug Davis, vice president and general manager, Intel Digital Enterprise Group.

"F5 Networks' application delivery platforms already incorporate Intel IA processors and Cavium's NITROX and OCTEON processors," said Karl Triebes, senior vice president of product development and CTO of F5 Networks. "We welcome additional hardware and software optimization of the combined Cavium and Intel solution in a scalable fashion and look forward to using the joint designs and interfaces."

Reference Designs

Intel will enable Cavium's NITROX and OCTEON processors in its reference designs targeted for the network appliance, unified threat management, application oriented networking and communication infrastructure market segments. Cavium will enable Intel processors for its co-processing reference designs for the same market segments. These tightly coupled reference designs will ensure seamless interoperability between Intel IA processors and Cavium's OCTEON and NITROX processors and deliver leading performance through optimized, ready-to-use software drivers and APIs. Key hardware and software interfaces supported by Cavium Networks include PCI/PCI-X, PCI Express, Intel QuickAssist technology and Geneseo.

Availability

Cavium's NITROX processors, PCI-X and PCIe accelerator boards for accelerating encryption based protocols including IPsec, SSL, WPA v2 in Intel IA processor systems are available now. Cavium's OCTEON processors and PCI-X accelerator boards for accelerating networking, storage and wireless applications running on Intel architecture based processor systems are also available now.
