SEMICON WEST 2007: Rexroth Introduces camoLINE-the Cartesian Motion Building System

(CHARLOTTE, NC - www.boschrexroth-us.com) An innovative approach to Cartesian Motion Systems has just been introduced by Rexroth, allowing manufacturing engineers who need Cartesian motion to combine Rexroth's standard electromechanical and pneumatic components to create the system that best solves their manufacturing need. A surprisingly unique and easy hardware connection system saves time and money throughout the development process of Cartesian systems by eliminating the need to combine components from different manufacturers with different interfaces. The simplified connection system also eliminates the need to fabricate custom connection elements from scratch.

Positive-locking connection technology - for lasting accuracy

Aluminum profiles up to 4 m in length form the structural system for camoLINE. Each profile features two rows of centering holes with standardized spacing. Special centering rings allow the user to connect individual camoLINE components, either directly or via matching connection elements to create positive-locking joints requiring no additional adjustment. The positive-locking connectors ensure lasting accuracy in the structure and eliminate the need for time-consuming alignment of the individual elements.

High-performance mechatronics-electrical or pneumatic

The standardized connection system allows users to choose the most appropriate drive technology for their application from Rexroth's pneumatic or electric drive units. The electromechanical Compact Modules in the linear motion range are available with ball screw drive for high positioning accuracy, or with toothed belt drive for high travel speeds. With two Ball Rail systems integrated in their aluminum extrusion frame, Compact Modules offer high load capacities and high rigidity. Motors can be easily attached to the drive end of the compact linear modules via a locating feature and fastening thread. Rexroth offers specifically designed standardized interfaces for direct motor attachment as well as for attachment of timing belt side drives or planetary gears.

Rexroth IndraDyn servo motors in protection class IP 65 offer high performance in a compact envelope. Equipped with Hiperface multi-turn absolute encoders, these motors retain the absolute axis position even when the system is powered down-eliminating the need for referencing cycles when the system is powered up again. All motors can be ordered with or without a holding brake, to suit the specific requirements.

High performance pneumatic actuators round out the camoLINE system by reducing system cost and complexity required to achieve simple handling tasks. Mini Slides with two drive cylinders allow easy mounting of additional handling components and are available in a series of standardized stroke lengths. Powerful Rotary Compact Modules feature accurate and high-load rotary flange bearings. Pneumatic parallel, angular and radial Grippers come in narrow size increments to cover a broad range of needs.

By letting users customize Cartesian motion systems to match their application, Rexroth has opened up a new area of competition in robotics. The ability to combine pneumatic and electric axes in almost any configuration means that each system offers the most appropriate and economical drive solution for the application, while offering substantial time savings in both installation and start up.
