Carbon Composition Resistors withstand 1,000 V overloads.

Press Release Summary:

Capable of handling energy pulses up to 30 J, RC Series features resistance values from 1 Ω to 20 MΩ with tolerances down to ±5%. Units operate from -55 to +105°C, and are available in power ratings of ¼, ½, and 1 W at 70°C. Resistors are inherently non-inductive, yet do not exhibit catastrophic failures, making them suited for surge protection and high peak voltage uses such as defibrillators, electronics, automotive ignition systems, and industrial power supplies.

Carbon Comp Resistors from Stackpole Withstand 1000V Overloads, 30J Pulses

High-energy axial resistors are ideal for surge protection, high peak voltage applications...

RALEIGH, NC (November 28, 2005) - Stackpole Electronics, Inc.'s RC Series of highly reliable carbon composition resistors are capable of handling overload voltages up to 1000V and energy pulses up to 30J in power ratings to 1 watt.

Designated the RC Series, these high-energy resistors are ideal for applications requiring a highly stable, but small resistor device with the capability to withstand increased peak voltages and high energy pulses, which are required in applications such as defibrillators, consumer electronics, automotive ignition systems and industrial power supplies.

"Design engineers continue to demand smaller components that offer high peak voltage handling and increased energy ratings," said Kory Schroeder, Product Engineering Manager for Stackpole. "The RC Series provides engineers with a cost effect resistor device that handles more than six times the pulse energy and twice the limiting element voltage (1000V) of comparably sized wirewound resistors.

The RC Series' carbon composition construction is unique in that it allows for very high resistance values, has excellent pulse handling capability, is inherently non-inductive and yet does not exhibit catastrophic failures demonstrated by other film and wirewound resistor types.

The RC Series is available in power ratings of ¼, ½ and 1 watt at 70˚C, with a maximum overload voltage of 1000V and pulse handling rating of up to 30 Joules. Resistance values range from 1Ω to 20MΩ with tolerances down to ±5%. Operating temperature range is from -55˚C to +105˚C.

The RC Series pricing is power and tolerance dependent, but $0.08 is typical in quantities of 1,000 pieces. Lead time for the RC Series is 8 weeks to 10 weeks.
