Capacity Trucks Selects Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final Solution for Terminal Tractor Line

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Capacity Trucks has chosen Volvo Penta to be a supplier of EPA Tier 4 Final engines for its line of Sabre terminal tractors. A Volvo Penta 173 hp engine was recently installed into a Capacity truck that made its debut at the Capacity Dealer Meeting in early June and will be deployed at several different warehouse/distribution centers. A higher power unit, 214 hp, will be deployed at the Port of Long Beach in California. Capacity expects to offer these engines as a standard option across its full line of Sabre trucks starting in early 2017.

“We were looking to give our customers a choice in power sources,” explained Andy Cooper, director of engineering for Capacity Trucks. “After evaluating several players in the industry, we selected Volvo Penta as the engine that will provide our customers with the best ROI. The Volvo name is well-known in the industry, and their engines have a reputation for quality and reliability that meet our own rigorous standards.”

Volvo Penta’s Tier 4F engines use a proven selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), to meet EPA emission standards and do not require periodic regeneration, resulting in less downtime and lower maintenance costs.

“Volvo Group pioneered implementation of SCR as part of the total solution for over-the-road trucks in this region back in 2010 and here at Volvo Penta we are in a position to leverage this proven technology that has been deployed in more than 270,000 Volvo Group trucks in North America,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas.

“We were impressed with the outstanding support from the Volvo Penta team. Volvo Penta alleviated any engineering challenges as the team was highly knowledgeable and accessible and made the process as seamless as possible,” said Cooper. “We also like the torque performance of these engines, which provide high torque even at low RPMs and give excellent fuel efficiency.”

“This agreement with Capacity Trucks, a respected industry leader in the terminal tractor market, is an important validation of our superior solutions,” said Darren Tasker, vice president of industrial sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Our team will work closely with the Capacity engineering team to give the initial two units thorough testing and support the roll out of the Volvo Penta-powered models later this year.”

Based in Longview, Texas, Capacity has been a leading name in trucks for ports, warehouses and intermodal terminals for more than 40 years. In 2012, Capacity and its parent company, REV Group, launched a major design and engineering program that resulted in the new Sabre line, which sets a new industry benchmark for durability, efficiency, productivity and lifetime costs of ownership.
