Economical Low-Power Capacitive-Touch IC with Sophisticated Power Management Features

Pittsford, NY: QT102 is a new, unique, single- channel touch-on/touch-off sensor chip with integral power management and safety functionality - perfect for products with tough power management requirements, such as appliances or toys. SOT-23- packaged QT102 combines a toggle mode on/off switch with a hardware-programmable, auto- switch-off/override/reset capability. Significantly, QT102 also provides immediate shut-off in case of system malfunction - an important safety feature, preventing appliance overheating when forgetting to switch off, for instance.

QT102 also provides sophisticated internal power management control, running mostly in low- power mode, switching temporarily to high power, fast mode once a touch is detected. This guarantees a typical consumption of 37mA at 3V but maintaining fast touch response. Additional unique features of QT102 include automatic recalibration to ensure reliable operation in changing environments, and a detect integrator which suppresses detection generated by electrical noise or unintentional contact with an object. A user-configurable output pin allows for easy interfacing to a host MCU or to drive power loads via a MOSFET or bipolar transistor.

QT102 only needs three external passive components (two capacitors and a resistor) to complete the sensor design. The sense electrode can be any conductive surface, from a simple printed circuit board pad or an area of see-through conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) printed onto a transparent touch screen. QT102 is so sensitive, it will project a touch (or even proximity) field through a wide range of dielectrics such as glass, plastic, ceramic - even wood! Sensitivity is easily adjusted through the design of sense electrodes or by changing capacitor values. QT102 uses patented spread-spectrum signal acquisition to insure high noise immunity and low RF emissions.

Applications for QT102 include touch control and auto-off for lighting controls, battery-driven consumer products, small domestic appliances such as irons, coffee makers and kettles, rice cookers, fans, flashlights, cordless headsets, toys, and even PC peripherals.

Designed by the leader in capacitive touch sense technologies, QT102-ISG is available now from Saelig Co. (USA distributor for Quantum Research UK) at less than 50 cents in high volume quantities.
