Color Concentrates Yield Intriguing Variegated Effects that Enhance Shelf Appeal Without Need for Special Equipment

New CamoTek™ Concentrates from Teknor Apex Produce Mottled, Swirled, Streaked or ‘Camouflage’ Colors for Coolers, Kayaks, Benches, Containers and Other Products

New concentrates for polyolefins enable injection and blow molders to impart variegated colors that add shelf appeal to consumer goods or have practical functions for products used both indoors and outdoors. Teknor Apex Company will introduce the concentrates at NPE2018 (Booth S22045).

New CamoTek™ concentrates contain proprietary formulations that yield mottled, swirled, streaked, or other variegated effects in products molded on standard equipment, requiring only an adjustment to process parameters. Any combination of colors is possible, depending on the desired effect. The concentrates can be used to impart intriguing patterns that enhance the shelf appeal of consumer goods like containers, lunch boxes, or coolers, or can yield a “camouflage” look for products like kayaks or fishing tackle boxes.

In the past, variegated effects were easy to achieve, but this is no longer possible with today’s modern processing equipment, said John Wood, technical manager. “Improvements in screw design and mixing have defeated old methods of achieving these effects.” said Mr. Wood. “CamoTek concentrates, combined with appropriate changes to process parameters, make such colors possible again.”

There has been a renewal of interest by processors in variegated effects, noted Edwin Tam, director of marketing and business development. “Special effects often involve limited-run colors that take up a small portion of a molder’s overall volume,” he said. “By eliminating the need for equipment modification, our new concentrates add a new dimension of flexibility for molders seeking to add consumer value to their products.”
