OmniVision Debuts Cost-Efficient 2-Megapixel Sensors for Tablets and Mobile Devices

High Performance OV2680 and OV2685 Deliver Improved Image and Video Quality in a Smaller Die Size

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced two high-performance 2-megapixel CameraChip™ sensors for feature phones, smartphones and tablets. The OV2680 and OV2685 leverage OmniVision's 1.75-micron OmniPixel3-HS™ pixel technology to deliver high quality 2-megapixel images and video at 30 frames per second (FPS). The sensors' high sensitivity and low-dark current features deliver exceptional image and video quality, even in low-light conditions.

"High-quality image sensors in feature phones, in addition to video conferencing and video-in-video functionality in smartphones and tablets, are becoming extremely popular, which further highlights the importance for mobile device manufacturers to include high performance yet cost-effective camera solutions," said Justin In Pyo Kim, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision. "The OV2680 and OV2685 are at this intersection of cost and performance. Our OmniPixel3-HS technology delivers improved image and video quality, while efficient circuit design further reduces cost and footprint."

Compared to the previous generation 2-megapixel sensors, the OV2680 and OV2685 are cost-effective upgrade solutions that deliver improved image and video quality in a smaller die size. The sensors' simple system design ensures quick and easy integration with modern smartphone and tablet basebands. Both sensors support an active array of 1600 x 1200 pixels (2-megapixel) operating at 30 FPS and cropped 720p high definition (HD) video at 60 FPS.

The OV2680 RAW sensor fits into an industry standard 5.5 x 5.5 x 4 mm module, while the OV2685 is a fully integrated system-on-a-chip (SoC) sensor that fits into an industry standard 6 x 6 x 4 mm module. The OV2680 and OV2685 are available in a chip scale package (CSP). Both sensors are currently sampling, and are expected to enter volume production in the first quarter of 2014.
