EDS Launches New Version of Solid Edge CAD Software

"Design-with-Insight" approach to Solid Edge version 12 provides industry-unique, built-in design management to extend productivity of advanced product modeling

PLANO, Texas - EDS today announced version 12 of its Solid Edge® computer-aided design (CAD) software used globally by thousands of manufacturing companies developing a wide range of industrial, commercial and consumer products.

"Since its introduction in 1996, Solid Edge has led the industry in providing modeling innovations to its customers," said Dan Staples, director of strategic planning for Solid Edge. "What separates Solid Edge from other modeling systems is the 'Design-with-Insight' approach. Designers are now generating larger and more complex 3D assemblies. The ability to manage the crucial data contained in those models is no longer an option if a company is to remain competitive."

CAD innovations delivered in Solid Edge V12 include Insight.NET web services for collaboration and communication and a new Stream/XP user interface. V12 adds process-driven capabilities for wiring-harness design; significantly faster drawing creation; and extended, unique associative interoperability with other EDS products such as I-deas® and Unigraphics® NX.

First introduced in 2001 as an industry-exclusive innovation, Solid Edge Insight technology in V12 advances the management of complex product designs in a simple, cost-effective and unobtrusive manner. Solid Edge V12 extends these capabilities across the enterprise with a complete set of web-based viewing components that use Microsoft's .NET technology and new web services for accessing the engineering bill of materials (BOM).

"The new Web Components in Solid Edge V12 will allow us to expand the use of design data beyond our 35 CAD users to about 70 non-Solid Edge users in purchasing, parts, production control and on the shop floor," said Jon Cook, engineering information manager at MacDon Industries in Winnipeg, Canada. "This greatly speeds access to product information and allows us to eliminate costly custom search engines we had to develop and constantly maintain."

Stream/XP
Since version 1, Solid Edge Stream Technology defined CAD productivity in the industry by capturing design intent through inference logic and decision-management concepts to dramatically affect return on investment and ease of adopting a new CAD system. V12 Stream Technology adds a new Stream/XP user interface, including a set of unique commands that provide Solid Edge CAD users with the industry's most exciting, modern appearance.

"When you spend your day working at a computer, the look and feel of a software system is very important," said M. Christophe Nizou of Beneteau Group in St. Hilaire De Riez, France. "The new look and usability enhancements in Solid Edge V12 apply a very pleasing level of ergonomics that will allow our designers to more effectively interact with the software."

Wiring and surfacing based on industry processes

Solid Edge V12 adds wiring harness and surfacing design to its existing arsenal of practical workflows for applications ranging from sheet metal, to weldments and tubing.

"Being able to model wiring into our assemblies eliminates a very time-consuming step in which we have had to manually create wire lists on paper," said Bob Tonnancour, CAD/CAM administrator at Liebert Corp., an Emerson Network Power subsidiary in Irvine, Calif." Solid Edge allows us to automate the process of generating wiring reports for the manufacturing of our uninterruptible power systems."

2D/3D evolution

Solid Edge combines a full set of options to migrate 2D data to 3D with superior tools for the 2D documentation process. Version 12 builds on Solid Edge's reputation for unparalleled drafting, continuing to automate normally time-consuming drafting processes such as ballooning and hole tables. V12 adds superior tools for speeding up the evolution from 2D to 3D design.

"Key to our success is communicating our 3D designs with 2D drawings," said Juergen Niesner, CAD system manager at Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH in Regensburg, Germany. "Solid Edge V12 allows us to create drafts from our large assemblies three to five times faster than before. That time savings provides two major benefits: we can spend more time optimizing and creating new designs and we produce more, custom drawings specifically meeting the diverse needs of our end users, whether they are in production, quality assurance or among our customers."

Open by design

Solid Edge V12 fully supports NX Gateway for interoperability with other EDS tools such as Unigraphics, I-deas, FEMAP and Imageware to extend the range of solutions backed by a single source for support and stability.

"We use EDS products because of the industry-unique interoperability between Solid Edge and the high-end Unigraphics systems," said Pat Fairchild, an engineer at Adam Aircraft Industries in Englewood, Colorado. "Solid Edge extends that useful interoperability, making us more productive. We use the powerful surfacing capabilities in Unigraphics for aerodynamic design and can leverage data across a wider group of engineers working on Solid Edge."
