EDS Launches Solid Edge® Version 14

New Rapid Blue technology leads long list of enhancements - opens new markets for industry-leading CAD software

Company introduces product in conjunction with Solid Edge Global Summit

SOLID EDGE GLOBAL SUMMIT, ORLANDO, Florida - EDS today launched Solid Edge Version 14, its industry-leading, value-based 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system for the mainstream product lifecycle management (PLM) market.

EDS made the announcement in conjunction with the fifth annual Solid Edge Global Summit, which opened today in Orlando, Florida. Tony Affuso, president of EDS PLM Solutions, is scheduled to address the conference today.

EDS expects to ship the product in March, and to deliver all new features to customers under current maintenance contracts at no additional cost

"Today, Solid Edge takes a new step forward with the announcement of Rapid Blue shape creation -- a technology that will attract designers of consumer and other products with complex shapes," Affuso said. "We believe this move opens up as much as 30 percent more market to Solid Edge beyond its well-established presence among machinery, electro mechanical and tooling designers. We look forward to continued expansion as more companies discover Solid Edge's unique capabilities."

Solid Edge
Solid Edge (www.solidedge.com) from EDS is powerful 3D CAD software that allows manufacturing companies to Design with Insight and to reduce time to market, improve quality and lower cost. The exclusive Solid Edge Insight technology embeds design management capabilities directly within CAD, providing insight into design intent to the entire organization and enhancing collaboration. Insight, complemented by Solid Edge's superior core modeling and process workflows, has reduced Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and their related rework by 50 percent or more.

The extensive Solid Edge user community is comprised of designers at thousands of companies and universities, including, Amana, Philips Broadcasting Systems, Pella Windows, Alcoa, NEC Engineering, Volvo and Yale University using more than 135,000 seats worldwide. The Solid Edge Voyager Program includes 160 integrated complementary, engineering software applications and computer hardware solutions.

Rapid Blue Leads Enhancements in Version 14
New Rapid Blue shape creation technology leads the list of enhancements in Solid Edge Version 14, and EDS expects the inclusion of Rapid Blue to broaden the appeal of Solid Edge into new markets. Solid Edge's Rapid Blue approach to shape design puts the user in control by providing the shape the designer wants rather than the one the CAD system wants to provide. Solid Edge users can evaluate shape alternatives in real time and retain shape even through complex edits.

Rapid Blue consists of a series of unique features including Blue Dots, Blue Surf, shape-preserving curves, dynamic editing and complementary surface blending, filleting and analysis capabilities for robust complex shape creation. More than just another surface modeler, Rapid Blue shape creation technology builds on the foundation surfacing capabilities released in Solid Edge V12 to launch a new application that frees designers from the systematic history-based constraints of other design systems.

Additional Version 14 enhancements include:
o Insight.NET: Managed Design Collaboration now with Lifecycle Assistant. Insight.NET evolves with Lifecycle Assistant, delivering automated workflows for design revision and release processes, bringing more power and control to information sharing for comprehensive managed collaboration "out of the box." The highly successful Insight.NET, Solid Edge's built-in design management solution, now provides more robust tools for automated project release workflow with complete packages of documents and a recursive revision history. The new capability makes it easier for users to collaborate via internal and external networks, while maintaining control of their documents. Lifecycle Assistant adds these powerful tools while preserving Solid Edge Insight's easy-to-implement and easy-to-use design management system.

o Stream/XP: Applied Ergonomics. The proven productivity advantages of Stream/XP, Solid Edge's XP-like user interface, extend even further with a new ergonomic layout to enhance user focus and reduce fatigue. Optimized screen layout with an enhanced SmartStep process workflow assistant easily navigates users through the design processes, prompting them for next steps and inputs, while minimizing cursor travel distances and eliminating annoying pop-ups.

o Top Down Assembly Design and System Libraries for Massive Assemblies. Solid Edge customers routinely create massive assemblies -- some having more than 100,000 parts. Version 14 introduces a unique new capability to speed top-down assembly design and increase confidence by capturing and storing design knowledge in new ways. First, 2D concept sketches can be created and applied to create or modify their associated 3D models.

In addition, Version 14 introduces a new system library capability that defines, stores and reuses cohesive sets of parts plus their associated features and constraints.

o Fast, Proven Production Drafting. Already known as a powerful tool for day-to-day drafting requirements, Solid Edge extends its drafting capability with even faster view creation, advanced drawing productivity tools and expanded view types. Tests have shown Solid Edge to outpace competitors' systems in view creation and manipulation, taking as little as one-third the time to retrieve and place views for assemblies of more than 1,200 parts.

o Extended EDS PLM Solutions Interoperability and Scalability. Solid Edge extends and leverages interoperability with the EDS PLM Solutions' product portfolio. Version 14 now automates scalability from Insight to Teamcenter® Engineering, providing Solid Edge users with a choice of proven, robust design management solutions. Organizations can start with Insight "out of the box" today and scale seamlessly to Teamcenter Engineering, when and if requirements demand, with no loss of data.

"I was very surprised to see the large number of new features added to Solid Edge in such a short period of time," said Version 14 beta tester Christophe Furgerol, CAD manager for VAI Clecim in Saint Chamond, France. "Compared with other systems we have used, Solid Edge adds customer-oriented enhancements rather than non-usable marketing features. We are very comfortable with our selection of Solid Edge and its future as our design system."

Added Ray Kurland, president of TechniCom Inc., "Solid Edge users now have the best of all worlds with a powerful solid and surface modeling system aligned with a sophisticated database system for managing product designs."
