EDS Launches I-deas® 9


New I-deas 9 CAD/CAM/CAE Software Delivers Streamlined Design Process Workflows, 500 Customer-Driven Enhancements; Supports Enhanced Interoperability Between Former UGS and SDRC Applications

PLANO, Texas - EDS today announced the release of I-deas® 9, one of two premier computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) applications from its PLM Solutions line of business.

CAD/CAM/CAE software leverages the power of computers to design, analyze the structural integrity of and manufacture mechanical products. I-deas 9 delivers more than 500 specific customer-driven enhancements in the software to make design work faster, easier and more productive. The software application's new, innovative modeling methodology delivers a streamlined design process workflow, significantly reducing design cycle times.

Strengthens Interoperability
I-deas 9 further strengthens the interoperability, or linkage, between I-deas and Unigraphics, the company's other leading CAD/CAM/CAE solution. In addition, it delivers additional functionality in well-known areas of I-deas leadership, including collaboration, user experience and digital validation. EDS announced unprecedented levels of interoperability between its I-deas and Unigraphics software suites on October 9.

The scope of enhancements included in I-deas 9 targets high-end users developing complex, multiple-system products.

"Initial customer feedback confirms these enhancements are very high value, especially when complex designs are revised and modified."

Customers participating in short-cycle markets fully exploit the capabilities of I-deas 9, not only for initial part geometry creation but also for fast modification and revision of existing designs. I-deas 9 provides a significantly streamlined design process workflow, a result of a modeling improvement initiative that has spanned three product cycles and will continue with the I-deas 10 development and release. I-deas 9 optimizes the model structure with commands that combine common tasks into versatile single functions. This reduction in process steps substantially
speeds product modification.

Beta Customers Applaud I-deas 9 Commitment
Beta testing of I-deas 9 drew praise from existing customers, including Lee S. Murray, a design manager at Troy Design & Manufacturing, a Michigan-based automotive supplier.

"We are eagerly awaiting the release of I-deas 9," said Murray. "The new surface extend/make corner function coupled with the variational sweep robustness will have an immediate impact on our surface development process. We expect this to be a significant time saver and a capability that enables us to add quality to the integrity of our surfaces."

Further Strengthening of I-deas Leadership Areas
I-deas 9 includes a broad spectrum of enhancements that continue to lead the CAD/CAM/CAE industry, including:

Collaboration - Embedded tools and functions that facilitate collaboration have always been a core element of I-deas. I-deas 9 furthers collaboration with several enhanced capabilities. The I-deas XML viewer has been expanded to support additional file types, strengthening the impact of the collaboration tool. Data translators have been enhanced to improve collaboration with non-
native data sources. 3D product and manufacturing information, associated directly to the solid model, supports paperless collaboration. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers recently announced standard Y14.41 that defines conventions for 3D annotation. The I-deas development team participated in defining this key industry standard and I-deas 9 complies.

I-deas Enterprise Release 2.0 - Extending collaboration even further, I-deas 9 will fully support I-deas Enterprise Release 2.0. I-deas Enterprise is a collaborative environment that offers users the ability to work together in geographically distributed product development teams, seamlessly pulling together many different types of end users through a single interactive environment. Enhancements include precise access control for specified data items, event notification, expanded data migration tools and compatibility with the Teamcenter Collaboration Foundation 2.0 environment. I-deas Enterprise Release 2.0 will be available in early 2002.

User Experience - I-deas 9 includes the option of a highly customizable user interface. The Microsoft Windows compatible interface offers the option of customizing the icon layout and
pull-down menus to suit user, company or process-specific needs. As a result, I-deas can be easily configured for users of all experience levels, from the casual to the most experienced, and
comes out of the box with several typical options.

Digital Validation Market Leadership - I-deas 9 extends the market leadership position for CAE and simulation with new geometry abstraction tools. Section-On-Mesh enables quick use
of digital validation capabilities by creating new finite element models (FEM) on imported geometry from a variety of sources. Stereolithography files or legacy FEM mesh can be used as a basis for revised digital simulations, adding flexibility to the manner in which digital validation can be quickly integrated into existing processes.

Customer Driven CAM Functionality - I-deas 9 Generative Machining adds value for tooling manufacturers with significant innovation for die face and die structure machining. Workflow breakthroughs in linear machining include an emphasis on efficiency with a process-orientated user experience. Specific new or enhanced functions include machine simulation, pencilmill machining, smooth high-speed machining connections, interactive graphic toolpath editing, hole-making automation, advanced curve/edge machining and improved toolpath reprocessing.

Data Interoperability - I-deas 9 users also will have access to interoperability tools between I-deas and Unigraphics. This unprecedented interoperability - based on industry-open standard Parasolid/eXT technology - will allow customers to effectively combine the best capabilities of I-deas and Unigraphics to benefit their business processes. Backed by the power of a combined research and development effort, this interoperability expands the I-deas 9 tool set and represents the first step in the longer term process of leveraging and combining the best I-deas and Unigraphics capabilities into a single product offering. These interoperability tools will be available in the near future with the release of Unigraphics Version 18.
