CableEye® Library for LabVIEW® Available from CAMI Research

Interface Package Simplifies Programming CableEye Testers from National Instruments' LabVIEW

CAMI Research introduces a software library that allows LabVIEW programmers to easily control CAMI's CableEye cable and harness test systems. CableEye can now simply and quickly be integrated into lab, test, and production environments driven by the LabVIEW software.

For programmers with fairly simple requirements, the library contains a single callable component (known as a Virtual Instrument or VI) that drives measurement of a cable attached to the CableEye test fixture, compares the cable to a known good cable from the CableEye database, and returns the test results in tabular form. Programmers requiring more control over the CableEye test process also have access to a large number of VIs that they can use to configure the CableEye tester, initiate testing, and save and report results.

Each VI is fully documented within LabVIEW, so that a description of the VI, its use case, and inputs and outputs are immediately available to the programmer while they link the VI to their program. External online documentation also provides a complete list and description of the VIs in the library as well as an overview library usage. The library also contains multiple example programs that the programmer can use as reference or as templates for creating their own test routines.

The CableEye library for LabVIEW is based on interface technology that CAMI Research has offered to customers for many years and provides a stable platform on which to build a custom test regimen. It is compatible with the full range of CableEye testers, from the first model M1 continuity tester to the most recent HiPot models. The library is compatible with recent versions of the LabVIEW software: both LabVIEW 2009 and LabVIEW 2010 are supported.

A computer using the CableEye LabVIEW interface should have the CableEye software installed to provide the basic software drivers required to operate the tester and maintain the cable databases. Using these software components, a LabVIEW program can then acquire cable data from a CableEye tester, compare the measured data to a model cable, obtain test results as either the actual connection list or as a table of differences between the model cable and the actual cable, generate a test report in either printed or PDF form, log results to a transaction file, and several other customizable actions. A license option is required to create programs using the CableEye library in the LabVIEW development environment. Compiled programs, however, can be run on any computer with a valid CableEye license and attached CableEye hardware.

The CableEye tester checks cables and wire harnesses for opens, shorts, and miswires, measures diode forward voltage, checks resistance values over the range of 0.3 Ω to 10 MΩ, and tests conduction and isolation resistance against specified thresholds. The CableEye® Model M3U Cable Tester sells for $2195 for 152 test points and is expandable to over 2000 points. The LabVIEW interface package is available as a site license for $495.
