Bus Termination Controller for 0.75V DDR & QDR Memory Delivers High Current at High Efficiency

MILPITAS, CA - April 20, 2004 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3831-1, a synchronous switching DC/DC controller that guarantees output voltage regulation of 0.75V or lower for systems needing precision active bus termination for high-speed logic interface. The LTC3831-1 generates the termination voltage with ±1.6% accuracy. Older ICs are limited to 1.25V output while the LTC3831-1 is tested and guaranteed for both 0.75V and 1.25V. If required, this DC/DC controller is can also provide even lower output voltages down to 0.4V. The LTC3831-1 can sink and source as much as 15A at up to 90% efficiency to satisfy small to large DDR/QDR memory banks. The IC drives two external MOSFETs synchronously and eliminates the need for a current sense resistor, which improves operating efficiency especially at high output currents. Applications for the LTC3831-1 include systems using DDR, DDR-II, QDR, and QDRII memory as well any other systems using high-speed logic interface such as SSTL-x and HSTL-x.

The LTC3831-1 is a voltage mode synchronous step-down DC/DC controller. The LTC3831-1 includes a fixed frequency PWM oscillator for low output ripple operation. The output voltage (termination voltage) tracks the input reference voltage and is regulated at one-half of the reference voltage. The IC's 300kHz free-running clock frequency can be externally adjusted with an external signal or synchronized from 100kHz to 500kHz to minimize noise interference.

The LTC3831-1 is housed in a 16-lead SSOP package. Pricing starts at $2.90 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
