New Beckhoff EIB and LON I/O Devices Communicate Over Ethernet

Bus Terminal I/O for building automation provides seamless, simultaneous communication over different network types

MINNEAPOLIS, November 8, 2005 - In order to help bring the benefits of leading edge Industrial PC- and Ethernet technology to building automation applications, Beckhoff Automation has introduced new EIB and LON Bus Terminal I/O. The KL6301 (EIB) and KL6401 (LON) can be used to integrate sensors and actuators commonly used in HVAC into the Beckhoff Bus Terminal I/O system and into Ethernet networks or other fieldbus systems.

PC- and Ethernet-based automation is becoming more established as a standard in building automation and is often preferred by many users over traditional fieldbus systems such as EIB and LON. Due to the implementation as "fieldbus-independent" communication terminals, the Beckhoff EIB/LON I/O devices can be connected to all higher-level fieldbus systems such as Ethernet TCP/IP, PROFIBUS, or Interbus.

A wide range of sensors and actuators such as those for room control units, sensing devices or probes are available and currently in use for the EIB and LON bus systems. The KL6301 (EIB) and KL6401 (LON) communication terminals were developed as extensions of the Bus Terminal I/O system to connect these devices to the Beckhoff control world as a "sub-fieldbus." Devices for traditional building fieldbus systems can be integrated with the Beckhoff building control system as part of modernization or retrofitting projects.

With more than 180 different Bus Terminals, the modular Beckhoff I/O system supports all relevant sensors and actuators for automation applications. This signal variety is now also available to EIB/LON users. The advantage to this approach is that cost-effective standard sensors and actuators are used, which means that no additional fieldbus interface is required.

Several communication terminals such as EIB, LON or DALI devices can be connected to a single I/O station, and even mixed-type configurations are possible. This significantly reduces the hardware and commissioning effort and costs. The EIB and LON Bus Terminals can be connected to all Beckhoff controllers, such as the BC, BX and CX series of embedded PC controllers as well as high end Industrial PCs.
