Vicor Introduces Quarter-Brick Intermediate Bus Converter Family Delivering up to 600 W



Nine bus voltages from 3 to 48 Vdc

ANDOVER, MA, January 28, 2004...Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ:VICR) today announced the availability of the first members of its family of 48 Vin Intermediate Bus Converter Modules (IBCs). Offered in standard 1/4-brick format and operating from a 38-55 Vdc input, the IBC family consists of nine fixed-ratio standard models with nominal outputs from 3 to 48 Vdc (3, 4, 6, 8, 9.6, 12, 16, 24, and 48 V) delivering up to 100 A or 600 W.

IBCs incorporate VoI Chip Bus Converters (BCMs) into the 1/4-brick standard as "VICs-in-a-Brick". This doubles the power capability of older technology IBCs for Intermediate Bus Architecture applications. Specifically, these pin-compatible, industry standard quarter bricks deploy either a single BCM, rated up to 300 W, or two parallel BCMs, capable of 600 W. Output current is limited by the pins of the 1/4-brick to 50 A or 100 A, depending on the pin-out configuration.

Efficiency of the IBCs ranges from 95% at 3 V to better than 97% at 48 V. Full power is available with only 200 LFM, 55 deg. C air without a heatsink. The BCMs have exceptional speed and transient performance, responding to 100% step load changes in less than 1 ms -- 20 times faster than the fastest competitive brick. The high efficiency and superior transient performance result from the use of proprietary Sine Amplitude Converter (SAC) technology which provides zero-current and zero-voltage switching at a fixed, multi-megahertz switching frequency. SACs also provide exceptionally low input and output noise, significantly reducing or even eliminating costly and bulky filters.

VIC-in-a-Brick Intermediate Bus Converters are priced as low as 11 cents/Watt in OEM quantities. Sample quantities of the 3 V @ 50/100 A, 9.6 V @ 240/480 W, 12 V @ 200/400 W and 48 V @ 300/600 W models are available now.
