Sipex's Newest Buck Regulator Available in a Tiny DFN Package

(Milpitas, CA - June 10, 2003) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ:SIPX) today announced the latest addition to its highly efficient power management product line. The SP6655 is a synchronous 400mA buck regulator in a tiny DFN (Dual Fine pitch No lead) package. By occupying only 3x3mm of board space, the DFN package reduces layout area by 40%. The device has a 0.8V internal reference that allows low output voltages and is stable with ceramic capacitors, achieving very low output voltage ripple. This buck regulator is ideal for PDAs, MP3 players, cell phones, and other portable applications, where high performance and board space are at a premium.

The SP6655's proprietary architecture includes internal synchronous 0.3ohm switches that allow excellent efficiency across the entire load range. The architecture also allows 100% duty cycle operation, critical in extending operating life when the battery is at or below the minimum usable voltage.

This device operates from input voltages of 2.7V to 5.5V, ideal for single cell Li-Ion applications. By consuming only 20uA of quiescent current (typ) and an ultra-low 10nA in shutdown mode, the SP6655 extends battery life.

"We developed the SP6655 in response to our customers' increasing demand for the smallest possible power solution in their latest portable designs," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Sipex. "They can now achieve the highest levels of efficiency in a chip size package with the lowest overall solution cost."

SP6655 Features (typical):
o 10-pin DFN Package
o 98% Efficiency
o 20uA Quiescent Current- 10nA in Shutdown
o Guaranteed Minimum Output Current: 400mA
o 100% Duty Cycle operation
o 0.8V Reference
o Stable with Ceramic Capacitors
