Micrel Releases 3A SuperSwitcher(TM) Buck Regulator in SPAK

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (May 9, 2002) -- A high-current, high-efficiency buck regulator in a package 36% smaller than the commonly used TO-263 (D²PAK) is now available from Micrel Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in analog, power management and high-speed communication integrated circuits.
The MIC4685, the newest member of the SuperSwitcher(TM) family, is a 200KHz, PWM buck regulator housed in a 7-lead SPAK package. The device boasts a wide input voltage range of 4V to 34V, and a high 3A output current. Output voltage is adjustable down to 1.25V.
"The MIC4685 is ideal for applications where space and efficiency are critical. Its high efficiency operation and low junction-to-case thermal impedance of 2.2degC/W enables the device to provide more than 3A of continuous output current without a heatsink. In many applications, the MIC4685 can replace other regulators in bulky D²PAK and TO-220 packages," says Tony Grizelj, Micrel's marketing manager for power products.
The MIC4685 allows bulletproof designs with built-in safety features such as a cycle-by-cycle current limit, frequency foldback short circuit protection, and thermal shutdown.
The MIC4685BM is priced at $2.85 when purchased in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples are available from stock, and production quantities are stock to 12 weeks ARO.
