Brocade and reVision to Simplify Department of Defense Storage Consolidation Project

Proactive SAN Services Greatly Reduce the Cost and Complexity for Petabytes of Defense Department Data

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 7 / -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade®), the world-leading provider of Storage Area Network (SAN) connectivity solutions, is partnering with reVision, a Denver-based IT consultancy, to supply the United States Department of Defense (DoD) with advanced engineering services to consolidate data storage among its service agencies for greater resiliency, security, and economy. Brocade Professional Service consultants will be interconnecting the storage infrastructures of the DoD's armed forces and agencies into a Meta SAN storing multiple petabytes (millions of gigabytes) of both administrative and mission-critical command and control data. Featuring an architecture that utilizes over 17,000 ports of Brocade SAN products, the Meta SAN is one of the largest consolidated enterprise storage networks in the world.

Brocade will also provide the DoD with Onsite Engineering Services to help design, consolidate, optimize, and manage their storage infrastructures. Brocade onsite engineers will team with consultants from reVision to help reduce the costs, complexity, and risks of integrating DoD's SANs.

"We collaborated with Brocade Professional Services because the scope of the DoD's storage consolidation demanded industry-best practices and proven skills in building enterprise-class solutions," said Dr. Shawn Landry, Chief Technologist, reVision. "Given the DoD's large port counts, aggregating the SANs of multiple DoD agencies could have been extremely time-consuming and complex without a certified Brocade specialist working with us onsite. By turning to Brocade expertise and services, the DoD is taking a strategic approach to accomplishing its storage goals, which will yield substantial cost-savings for the enterprise."

Applying Best Practices to Control Data Storage

In partnership with reVision, Brocade is evaluating, designing, implementing, and refining the DoD's new storage infrastructure, ensuring it helps meet the department's stringent performance, security, and scalability needs. The Meta SAN relies on advanced technologies delivered by Brocade, including the SilkWorm® 48000 Director Blade FR4-18i for Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) routing, and the SilkWorm 48000 Directors that link the service agencies' geographically distributed SANs. This architecture enhances resiliency by helping to ensure that any technical issues on one SAN will not impact other storage systems. Additionally, by enabling the DoD to increase storage capacity via new SANs rather than make its existing systems even larger, the Meta SAN supports nearly unlimited expansion without causing burdensome complexity or management issues.

Although the constituent SANs rely on multivendor storage devices, the DoD's Meta SAN has been carefully engineered with securely connected endpoints, virtualization technologies, and other advanced techniques to tightly control access to each storage device and safeguard highly sensitive data. Moreover, the infrastructure features a multitiered architecture. Critical data is stored on high-performance storage devices, whereas less sensitive information is saved on more economical systems-reducing hardware costs across the DoD's service agencies.

"Our partnership with reVision demonstrates how federal agencies like the DoD can turn to Brocade Professional Services to meet their cost and security objectives," said Ray Wolf, Brocade Vice President of Services. "Our complete range of SAN Professional Services helps provide organizations a strong ROI by building and managing scalable infrastructures that operate at the highest levels of efficiency."
