Broadcom Technology Enables Oi to Deliver Live Ultra HD Broadcast of 2014 World Cup Events

IRVINE, Calif. - Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced today announced that Broadcom's BCM7252 system-on-a-chip (SoC) will power live broadcasts of the 2014 World Cup in Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD) by Oi, one of the leading operators in Brazil. Enabled by Broadcom's advanced decoding, the transmissions will deliver vivid live-action viewing with 60 frames-per-second resolution and 10-bit color. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.

Ultra HD TV technology represents a significant leap forward in picture quality. According to Digitimes Research, Ultra HD TV panel shipments are expected to increase 475 percent in 2014. At four times the resolution of today's 1080p60 displays, Ultra HD content requires a more efficient compression codec for delivery. Broadcom's integration of HEVC into its portfolio of Ultra HD devices gives viewers the ability to download content in half the time and with higher quality video at 50 percent of the bit rate previously required.

"Ultra HD delivers a much greater array of colors and sharper contrast, especially in the large-screen format, providing viewers with a feeling of being completely immersed in the action on the screen," said Dan Marotta, Broadcom Executive Vice President and General Manager, BCG. "By working closely with Oi, Broadcom is making Ultra HD a reality, enabling a dramatic improvement in the live action viewing experience and beyond."

"The initiative of Oi to deliver live Ultra HD broadcast of 2014 World Cup events reinforces its strategy in anticipating trends to the market and to provide the most modern telecommunications services," said Eduardo Aspesi, Oi Segments Director. "Our collaboration with Broadcom played an instrumental role in enabling one of the industry's first broadcasts of a live sporting event in the Ultra HD format."

According to Oi, the company offers an attractive and competitive package, and has the highest coverage of regional channels in direct-to-home (DTH) with 43 different affiliates of Rede Globo, the channel leader in audience in Brazil, in more than three thousand municipalities.

Broadcom's BCM7252 Ultra HD SoC is the first step to delivering Ultra HD with the performance and picture quality needed for the evolution in multi-screen connected home entertainment. With Broadcom's complete portfolio of HEVC-enabled devices, operators can substantially reduce the bandwidth required for video transmission, offer additional channels on IP, cable or satellite networks, and deliver these services to more locations throughout the home.
