One of the most pioneering advances in marine life-saving devices is the development of automatic inflation with cylinder seal indication. Unlike manually-activated PFD
inflators, where inflation is triggered by pulling an activation cord, automatic inflation devices sense when the wearer is immersed in water, and release a firing pin that pierces the gas cylinder to inflate the PFD. The inflator can also be triggered manually by pulling an activation cord. The status of the inflator can easily be viewed through a window: green indicates ready for use; red indicates the cylinder has been fired and the PFD must be re-armed.
