Bright LED Chips suit LCD backlighting applications.

Press Release Summary:

Series XB(TM)900 LED Chips are available in blue and green with minimum radiant flux of 90 and 40 mW, respectively. For backlight systems using smaller chips, green XThin® LED Chips offer 10 mW brightness. Brighter chips mean less power is needed to meet brightness specifications for backlighting applications, minimizing energy consumption and need for active cooling systems.

Cree Introduces Brighter LED Chips Optimized For LCD Backlighting Solutions

Increased chip brightness lowers energy requirements

Durham, NC - May 23, 2005 - Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a market leader in LED solid-state lighting components, announced that it has significantly increased the brightness of its blue and
green LED chip products targeted for the design of energy-saving LED backlighting solutions for larger LCD monitors and televisions.

For high power LED-based backlight systems, Cree is now shipping blue XB(TM)900 power LED chips that are 38 percent brighter, increasing the minimum radiant flux from 65 mW to 90 mW, and green XB900 chips that are 33 percent brighter, increasing the minimum radiant flux from 30 mW to 40 mW. For backlight systems using smaller chips, Cree has increased the brightness of its green XThin® LED chips from 8 mW to 10 mW, for the top radiant flux bins, to better match the high brightness of the company's blue XT-21(TM) and XT-24(TM) chips.

Cree's brighter chips mean less power is needed to meet the brightness specifications for backlighting applications, significantly reducing energy consumption and the need for active cooling systems.

The XThin product line is utilized in Cree's own backlighting solution, which is being introduced this week in conjunction with the SID International Symposium in Boston. The Cree
LED backlighting solution utilizes less energy than traditional CCFL-based solutions, demonstrating superior color rendering and energy efficiency.

"LED-based backlighting for LCD monitors and televisions is expected to grow dramatically over the next several years and we expect Cree LED chip products will be key enabling
components for the development of next-generation backlighting solutions," notes Scott Schwab, Cree vice president and general manager of optoelectronics. "Cree customers can use our XB900 power LED chips or the smaller high brightness XThin LED chips and achieve new benchmarks for brightness and energy efficiency."
