Brake Motors are short and compact.

Press Release Summary:

SABRE(R) SSB short series brake motor and HCB high cycle brake motor have brake built integrally into motor end shield. SABRE is suitable for unit handling, conveyance, cranes, and hoists. HCB works in baggage handling, packaging machinery, sortation equipment, and other motion control systems using electric or pneumatic clutch brakes. Both have single external manual release lever for use when power is off, and dc coil with built-in rectifier for lower power and quieter performance.

Two New Reliance(R) Brake Motors Launched to Meet Demands of Unit Handling Industry

GREENVILLE, SC (April 26, 2002) Rockwell Automation has expanded its offering for the unit handling industry with two new products specifically designed for conveyance applications, the SABRE SSB (short series brake motor) and the HCB (high cycle brake motor).

Continuing the Reliance Revolution, the SABRE(R) SSB short series brake motor offers a cost-effective option for OEMs servicing the unit handling and conveyance industries. In addition, the SABRE SSB brake motor has potential for applications such as cranes and hoists because it is a smaller, more compact product. For motion control applications with repetitive starting and stopping, the HCB high cycle brake motor is a new, definite-purpose product. It has applications in baggage handling, packaging machinery, sortation equipment, and other motion control systems using electric or pneumatic clutch brakes.

Both of these brake motors feature the brake built integrally into the motor end shield for the shortest, most compact brake motor solution. They combine the strengths of the DODGE(R) and Reliance product lines, utilizing D-series brake components and a small AC motor. By combining the two products, the total package is made approximately two and a half inches shorter than a non-integral product. The difference in length is important because space is a critical issue in some applications.

These new brake motors have a single external manual release lever for use when power is off and a DC coil with built-in rectifier for lower power and quieter performance. In addition, the softer DC brake means no inrush current and more cycles between adjustments. For ease of installation, simple visual adjustments are possible with a feeler gauge, plus brake leads are routed to the motor conduit box for combined or separate connection.

The SABRE SSB product is available in vertical or horizontal mounts, totally enclosed fan cooled, in ratings from 1/4 - 5 HP. The product incorporates 3 - 25 foot-pound rated brakes. In addition, because the SABRE SSB brake motor is mounted on the end shield of the motor, with the cooling fan behind the brake, the SSB operates cooler, extending coil life, increasing the number of cycles, and reducing the number of brake adjustments required. Running cooler also means the brake motor can withstand more stops and starts, an innovation that led to the creation of the HCB product.

The HCB product is available in horsepowers from 1/2 - 2, with 3 - 15 foot-pound brakes, all in a finned aluminum frame. The HCB is totally enclosed fan cooled and available in vertical or horizontal universal mounting. It is rated for 30 stops/starts per minute and uses the same brake as the SABRE SSB product and a Reliance inverter duty motor for low temperature operation.

The HCB product also utilizes a higher torque per ampere design ratio to reduce accelerating losses and reduce temperature rise during multiple starts and stops. It comes with software that provides motor capability curves for each rating, listing the number of starts and stops based on the load inertia for up to 30 times per minute at class B temperature rise. This software also provides stopping distance data and a formula to determine rotations to stop at given inertias.
