Brady Label Materials Receive Certification for BS5609 Compliance

Vinyl materials and ink ribbons meet durability criteria for marine use

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 21, 2017) - Brady (NYSE:BRC), a global leader in industrial and safety printing systems and solutions, today announced that its B-595 and B-7569 vinyl label materials received certification for the BS5609 British Marine Standard. This internationally recognized standard ensures that identification and warning labels are tested to remain intact and legible, for use on chemical drums shipped by sea.

“Achieving BS5609 certification for these labels supports our efforts to continually improve our products and ensure durability and safety through the performance of our materials,” says Tom Smith, regional product manager for Brady. “Our B-595 and B-7569 labels now align with an internationally recognized standard to keep vital information intact and readable on potentially dangerous chemicals that could face extreme environments and underwater immersion through marine shipping.”

BS5609 includes four parts, and Section 2 and 3 detail the required testing to ensure that a label will remain adhered and legible when submerged in seawater for three months. Section 2 tests the base label material against marine exposure through salt spray, sunlight, temperature cycling and more. Section 3 tests are conducted to determine print permanence after the base label passes Section 2. These additional tests determine print permanence, abrasion resistance and legibility after exposure to salt spray and sunlight.

The BS5609 standard is a requirement for merchant shipping regulations, International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) certification and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

Brady’s B-595 and B-7569 label materials, and approved ribbons (R10000 black/red for B-595, and R6000 or R10000 black for B-7569), can be used in a variety of Brady’s portable and benchtop printing systems for fast and easy industrial identification.
