The awards were presented by Engine Technology International, a quarterly magazine published by England's UKIP Media & Events. Winners of eleven engine capacity categories were chosen for the International Engine of the Year 2008. This year, seven of the eleven category winners were turbocharged engines. In every category, a panel of 65 motoring journalists from 32 countries rated the engines based on fuel economy, smoothness, performance, noise and drivability.
